Mitch's Trip to the ER

This story actually happened last Monday and we just didn't mention it because basically there was no diagnosis!
Scruffy and Lacie made me realize that maybe we should post it so here goes!

Last Monday we left our house at 7AM to go on our normal walkie and about 1/4 mile into it, Mitch picked up an acorn or it may have been a hickory nut shell and he swallowed it. He started to choak and it wouldn't come up. Mom shoved her fingers down his throat and it didn't help at all! He was in a wee bit of distress but he was breathing fine and wasn't in any danger. We actually walked back home, gave Mitch a drink of water and it still didn't clear it out! Mom had just watched a video at Johann's blog about a choaking incident and a CPR hero and it scared her to death (if you haven't seen it - check it out! It's a real eye opener!) so Mitch was loaded into the car and mom and dad took off!
They sorta forgot to take my harness off because they were in such a rush! Hey, what about me??!!
Once they got to the animal hospital, Mitch was seen right away. The vet tech didn't see anything but she wanted him checked out by a doctor. Oh, Mitch had vomited 3 times by this time and we still thought something was stuck! He did have an x-ray and it didn't show up anything - but an acorn isn't metal, it's a nut! And he was sedated and he did have a scope down his throat. The end result - nothing was found but they think that whatever he swallowed irritated his throat and tummy. He was given antacid-type pills to take for 4 days to help him out. So alls well that ends well with Mitch. They did trim his toenails and that had to have been the most expensive toenail job in history!
So the moral of the story is - we pay strict attention to what Mitch picks up and eats on our walkies from now on!

See, he's back to his old self - touching what's not his!

And guess what? I had a vet appointment today too! My yearly - with a rabies shot and that nasty thermometer up my butt - the whole works! I had blood drawn for testing and results aren't back yet. We expect that everything is just fine! So today was a quiet day for me.

So that's the scoop about both of our doctor visits.

So until next time................

Love ya lots,

Maggie

  1. Maggie...I know for a fact that Scruffy had a whole bowl of acorns for munching at the poker pawty this weekend. Mitch musta grabbed some and put 'em in his pocket...er whereever Dales stuff stuff...(Lakies use Coach handbags...Scruff uses a bandana and a stick...) Anyway, he looks a little guilty about not mentioning to Mitch that u need to chew them first. Frankly, I prefer Cocktail peanuts...with lotsa salt and fat. Mmmmm....So I bet Mitch's nails look fab...did u do them in a color or just use a clear polish???

  2. Mitch,

Chew...chew....swallow. Better yet, go for the ones in the jar, like Lacie said.

  3. Hi Maggie, Hi Mitch,

Oh Mitch, I'm so glad you are better. I tend to pick up all kinds of random things on my walkies. It makes Mom and Dad so frustrated. They're happy I outgrew my puppy habit of picking up cigarette butts (sadly in the city, there are a lot of these on the ground). Maggie, I hope all your test results come back clean! Healthy wishes to you both!!!

  4. Oh man, that was a very scawie incident. Oh let me tell you what happened to me when I was younger too. Same incident...

I was chewing my new tennis ball rawhide after I ate my dinner. My hooman M just gave to me to chew then when my hoomans turned around. They noticed that I have finished the whole thing less than 10 min. A few minutes later, I was gulping non-stop like there was something stuck in my throat. My hooman M shoved her fingers in my throat too & made vomit. I vomited my whole dinner out but no rawhide came out. I still continued gulping alot & they quickly rushed me to ER. It was very far away but it was the only vet that is open 24h here in my country. Upon reaching there, I was fine. But the doctor still did a check up on me but he said there was nothing stuck in my throat. He did more check ups & still found nothing wrong with me. Actually, the treat kind of like irritated my throat & probably got stuck there but went down after a while. That's why I was gulping like crazee like I couldn't breath. Phew!

Anyway, good luck at the vet's tomorrow Maggie. I hate things being shoved up my butt too...

(Actually I had a similar incident before.. I choked on a piece of raw hide and seriously thought I was going to the Rainbow Bridge. Luckily mom stuck her fingers down my throat and got that offending piece of object out.. *whew*)

  23. Hi Mitch,

Boy, you could have had a real problem there. Glad it worked out okay. I do the same thing on my walks. I pick up all kinds of stuff. When my mom tries to take something out of my mouth, I hide it real far in the back and she can't find it. I'm real good at that. Last week something was stuck and I was throwing up and sleeping a lot. It must have come up though because the next day I was better.

Take good care of yourself, Mitch. Try not to get into any major trouble.

So glad you're okay, buddy! I like to mess around with acorns on my walks too. My girl tries to be vigilant, but I'm always trying to hoover up stuff on the sidewalk. Lay off the acorns, man!

Maggsie, what is Mitch doing in that last photo to make you smile so big? You look like you're actually enjoying yourself with him. Thanks. That gives me hope!
