A Surprise Birthday Pawty

Mom is baking this morning and we were helping! She and dad have a surprise 50th birthday pawty to attend tomorrow WITHOUT us! Can you even believe it?!

The two recipes that she is making are Chewy Peanut Bars and Peanut Butter Fudgies! The best ingredient in BOTH of these recipes is the peanut butter! yummmmm

We're ready to begin mom!

She started with the chewy peanut bars first.

1/4 cup margarine or butter, 1 cup peanut butter, 1 - 14oz can sweetened condensed milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 2 cups quick-cooking oats, 1/2 cup coarsley chopped peanuts and 1/2 cup raisins.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In large saucepan over low heat, melt butter. Remove from heat and add peanut butter, condensed milk, vanilla and salt and mix well. Stir in oats, peanuts and raisins. Spread evenly into greased 13" X 9" pan. Bake 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool thoroughly and cut into bars.

Mitch and I need to whine about the addition of the raisins, mom! They are NOT on our food acceptable list, ya know! You're being mean by teasing us!

Secondly, mom changed the nuts from peanuts to walnuts! Another bummer! Thanks to Brutus and Rufus we now can't have walnuts! We owe you one guys! Honestly though, it's not their fault - they're just trying to keep us safe and be our friends. We apologize! Thanks, guys! hehehe
We got to lick the spoon anyway!
The bars came out of the oven! ahhhhhhhhhhh, the aroma of peanut butter! Can you see that mini painting at the top of the photo? Our friend, Miss Barbara painted that when I was very young. That was my first Mr. Plush carrot that I have to admit is no longer with us! OOPS - but I still have that big blue ball!
Next up - the peanut butter fudgies

2 cups sugar, 2 1/2 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa, 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 cup butter or margarine, 1/2 cup peanut butter and 2 cups quick-cooking oats.

Combine sugar and cocoa in a large saucepan; add milk, stirring until smooth. Add butter. Place over high heat and bring to a boil. Boil for 2 minutes

Remove from heat after 2 minutes is up. Add peanut butter and stir until melted. Add oats, mixing well. Let mixture cool until it firms a wee bit - like 10 minutes. Drop mixture by teaspoonfuls onto waxed paper; cool completely.

We have another gripe here, mom! um chocolate is not allowed either! I'm not even going to bother getting out of my resting position because now you're just being down-right cruel!

No we did NOT get a taste of this one before it hit the waxed paper but we did get a lick of peanut butter off the spatula! How generous you are, mom!

Here's the finished product. Mom says it tastes more like candy than cookies! They look so yummy but no taste for us!

Have a great time at the suprise pawty, mom and dad! Maybe you can bring us a doggie bag of acceptable treats! We'll be waiting!

So until next time..............

Love ya lots,

Maggie and Mitch

  10. We hope your pawrents have a pawsome time at the pawty and we hope you get lots of really good treats in that doggie bag.

Boy, the list of unacceptable treats seems to be growing...our mom just heard that we shouldn't eat strawberries or raspberries because they are a natural form of Xylitol. We don't know what that is, but we heard about somedogs that ate Orbitz gum and almost died. They are sweetened with Xylitol. Boohoo!

    Have a happy Sunday!

  12. We used to have walnuts too -- until Mom read that they weren't good for dawgs. Bummer.

As long as they don't find something wrong with peanut butter, I guess we'll survive.

Those cookies look pawsome. We can smell themall the way down here in South Florida!!

  13. Oh wow your Mom's quite the baker isnt' she! Yum!
Today Mom got me some doggie chocolate baked goodies from the dog show where we went. I let my housemates have some when we got home and they love 'em too. Mom is saving the special doggie-carob-bar-on-a-rawhide-stick just for me!
I did Rally Obedience again, our first time at Excellent, and got second place so Mom also let me have the rest of her Mickey D's egg-and-cheese biscuit too. Hold on now I'm going to get fat! (MOM: yeah right)

Mom got us the rats so we could practice Earthdog in our own tunnels in the back yard. So far we haven't practiced yet this year and now it's hot as blazes. I love to come upstairs and YELL hello to them! ("arfarfarfarfarf")

  14. Hmmmmmm. Can we borrow your mom to do some baking here? Ooops. Guess we shouldn't have said that. Better scratch that question in case Jan drops by.

  16. I think it is cruelty to animals when our people bake things that we are not allowed to eat! You showed remarkable restraint in not jumping up and eating all those people treats anyway.

  19. cooking sure is a lot of fun at your house. especially when you get to lick the spoon. but you can thank your mom for not sharing the fudge. that would be very very bad. so we are guessing that there is something wrong with walnuts too? poison? good to know.

    woofs.

  22. Boy, reading all these posts I'm realizing how many treats I've been missing out on! I only get dog food and treats, not very many people treats except for a piece of foccacia from the restaurant around the corner. Since I was a pup, the maitre d' has been hand-feeding me focaccia, and now I won't budge from their doorway until I get some!

    Stay cool!

Hey, thanks for telling us about the walnuts! Our birdy sister will occasionally drop a whole walnut on the floor. Now mom will have to run & pick it up before we get to it!
