Sherwood

We have more sad news! Sherwood passed away yesterday morning!

He was doing so well by himself! Dad was spending lots more time with him and yesterday he actually had him on his shoulder walking around in the yard and Sherwood seemed to love it! Barn Swallows were flying in and out of our barn saying hi to Sherwood when he chirped. We think maybe Sherwood got tired and couldn't tell dad that he'd had enough activity and he needed a nap. He unfortunately fell off dad's shoulder and hit the ground. He initially seemed fine after his fall. He was right back up and chirping away.

Missy and Jim came for dindin last night and after they left dad checked in on Sherwood again to feed him and get him ready for bed. He had jumped out of his nest again but when he heard dad's voice he would chirp and all dad had to do was put out his finger and he'd jump right on!

This morning Sherwood snuck out of his nest yet again and we think he must have fallen again. He lost his spunk and he stopped eating. Sherwood didn't want to die! He fought so hard to stay alive! Dad stroked him and told him not to struggle anymore. It was absolutely heartbreaking to watch! We feel so badly that God trusted us to take care of two of his precious little creatures and neither one of them made it.

Fly free little Barn Swallow babies! We're so happy we got to spend time with you - even if it was far too short! We'll miss you!

Love,

Maggie and Mitch

  1. Hi Maggie n Mitch,

You took care of Sherwood while he was alive; and that's what matters. I am sure that he loved you for what you did for him:)

I've added you to my "Go Digging at..." list. I hope it's okay with you.

  2. Oh wow. I was looking forward to hearing all about Sherwood's Adventures. I think the most important thing for Sherwood was to remember that he knew he was loved. You and your family gave him that and now one can ever take it away. He'll be waiting for you across the bridge. Sending comforting cuddles your way.

  3. wow this is amazing!

hi I have been by here before ... but quite some months ago. a lot of life has intervened since then...

so that lil birdie is a swallow?

is it true they MUST take off from a perch and cannot fly from sitting on the ground? this is supposedly because their wings are too long

excellent pictures and your doggies are exceedingly cute

    ;->...

    all the best 2u all

  6. Ahhh, so sorry to hear about Sherwood, what a great little chap. He sure had an adventure during his short life, he made friends all over the world and had the rare joy of being loved by both humans and doggies (not to mention pussycats and hamsters in the blog world!).

While short by our standards, his life was exceedingly rich!

You all did your best to give little Sherwood a chance at life. His brief time on earth gave us a lot to think about that we often take for granted.

  12. maggie and mitch -

You guys did all you could. It is very very difficult for baby birdies to live on without their mammas, and it's amazing that Sherwood was able to enjoy as much life as he did. Just remember - you allowed them both to live the remainder of their days in a comfortable house with people who cared about them, instead of just abandoning them outside like many many other people would have done.
It is a bittersweet reminder about how short life can be and how we have to really enjoy and appreciate the time we have.

  16. We are so sorry! But so few animals in life get to be so loved from the very start. There may have been a few bumps on Sherwood's journey but I think it's safe to say that he was one of the lucky ones. And who knows... maybe one day the spirit of Sherwood will come back as an airedale!

  26. Oh, my mum started cryin....Me too actually, don't tell no one I cried okay.....
Mum said she was so heartbroken when she rescued that one and he died. She tried so hard to help the lil birdie. She knows what you and your pawents are going through. I just knew that birdie would start jumping out of that box...I should have been better help to you and your daddy. My mum hates that your daddy has to go through that. Hurray for him though for trying....We always have to try even if it doesn't end the way we want too.

  30. Hey, Maggsie & Mitch.

I'm sending some comforting goober smooches to you, to your mama and to your sweet dad. You all made a valiant effort to help the barn swallow babies.

I'm wondering if God entrusted the care of those 2 babies to you so you could ease their way to the bridge and they didn't have to be alone and frightened during their short lives. You gave them some good lovin' in such a short time. That's more than some folks ever get.

    Goober love & more smooches,
    Stanley

  44. My heart goes out to you in your sadness at these little deaths. I once rescued two little nestlings and raised them to about this age. Then when I came out one morning they were dead. I was so devastated I had to come home from work after about an hour because I couldn't cope with my regret at their death.

Since then I have been told by a bird expert that's it's incredibly difficult to raise baby birds. It won't have been anything wrong in the care you were giving them. It's just that we can't provide all aspects of the care a mother or father bird would give.

  47. We are sorry to hear that Sherwood died. Baby birds are hard to raise if you aren't their mom. You did a great job trying and I'm sure they appreciated the love and effort you gave them.
