Crump Barn Update - the Rafters

Mom and I are on our way over to the Crump barn site.  Mitch and dad left a few minutes ahead of us!
I love sticking my nose out the window and catching the breezes!
Dad had help from a few of his timber frame buddies and they got queen posts up and queen post braces up and purlin plates up!  Those are the piece of wood on the second floor in the center of the building.  They help support the rafters.
These queen posts and braces and purlins are all pitched at an angle.
And because they are angled and because this is an antique barn frame, it makes putting up rafters a one-at-a-time deal and it's very time consuming.
See that pink string?  It helps dad takes measurements for each rafter.  It tells him that the roof is staying level and plumb as he adds more rafters.
Our barn raising is in two weeks and dad is starting all kinds of projects so when we have 50 timber framers at the raising who want to help out and stay busy, he can make teams and have everyone working.  We will raise the other 2 bents and raise the other top plates and queen posts and purlins and this will create more work for everyone.  It sounds confusing but dad always has a plan.
Hang in there with us.   The best is yet to come!

The neighboring farmer was haying today and the sweet fragrance of the hay was incredible!
We weren't up on deck today because dad said that it was too hairy for us to be up there supervising so we kept our paws planted firmly on the ground!
Our weather has been awesome for the last few days!  It's been cool temps and sunny with no humidity and we are just loving this!   Unfortunately, the humid hot yucky stuff will be back on the 4th!

So until next time...............

Love ya lots,
Maggie and Mitch

  16. oh boy, this is furry complicated. i can see why woo need supervisors at all levels-- and then with a big crew coming on board. Geesh!

  17. It sure looks and sounds complicated, putting up a barn that way, but the Crump barn will be still standing looooong after lots of newer barns have gone to ruins! Our dad would have looooved to have been involved in a project like that! He built a lot of barns, but we don't think any of them were like this one!

Have a happy and safe 4th of July. May the fireworks be pretty but silent!

    Aire-hugs,
    Penny & Patches

  18. HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!
Wishing you a fun, safe and well fed holiday.
Yeah I saw the pink string and that's all I know about construction!
Our weather has been pawsome too, raining for a few days straight. My mom is not thrilled to see 12 muddy paws marching into the house!
Her doormat says: "wipe your paws here" doesn't work!
    Cheers!
