For the Boys

Hi everyone!  It's me, Mitch, and mom needs help from all of you boy doggies.
This is a very personal matter and I can't believe she is putting my peepee habits out there, but she is!

My sissy, Maggie, pees on command. She's always done that and mom loves it. It makes it very easy when it's time to go somewhere because we can just move it along.
Well, I don't peepee on command. I pee when I have to and lots of times I choose to look at the sky and count stars or pretend that there are burglars next door and I need to step up bigtime and guard my mom or maybe I just want to poke along. You get the picture.
It doesn't matter if there is snow and ice on the ground or if there is green grass and the temps are mild.
I can hold it from 9 at night to 7AM the next morning and it's not a problem.   I don't drink a whole heck of a lot of water so this is probably a factor.

Mom says I'm a wierdo about doing poos too - I have to find exactly the right spot, no matter where it is and of course, my nearly perfect sissy who never does anything wrong poos anytime anywhere and she's always getting praised for a job well done.
Can you see all of this ice in our driveway?  Try and walk on it or better yet, try and pee or poo on it! Girl Scout Maggie has no problems in this department. As long as she's outside, she goes!
So all of you boys - do you do your peepees shortly after you get outside first thing in the morning or do you have to be coaxed and theatened that there will be no cookies for you if you don't go?   Can you all hold it for a million hours too like me?    I'm sick and tired of listening to mom go on and on about this so what's the scoop?

Thank you in advance!

Yer friend,
Mitch

  1. Hmm...What a predicament? My philosphy is when you gotta go, you gotta go. My humans always take me for my last call night pee before they go to bed. Sometimes I oblige them immediately but sometimes, I'm like Mitch and take my own sweet time sniffing around (drives my humans crazy!) In the morning, my humans will open the door (we have a secured garden) and sometimes I will pee immediately...but sometimes I wait until I go for a walk. I guess each dog is different :-)

  2. oh yeah, I can hold it for like 12 hours. Like last night I went outside at 10pm and didn't go again until 10 am. I casnot go if I get distracted! Also Mum says I poo at very inappropriate times. During the day I go more though and I do sorta go if Mum says to. Sometimes.

  3. OMD TMI. Dad just puts us all out back in the paddock for about 15 minutes each morning. During warm weather we usually stay outside all day. During cold weather we go out in the morning and then in the afternoon and again before bedtime. Of course if any of us goes to the back door and barks while mom or dad are home we'll get a paddock pass for at least 5 minutes. Sometimes Patti won't do her business out back; she has to get a special trip out front with mom or dad so that she can go out to the woods by the garage and do her thing. Mom and dad don't care for that because there's no fence out front. So not all girls are as cooperative as Maggie. In fact, here in Bumpass, the boys are easy but the girls are temperamental.

  4. We don't know if it has anything to do with male or female, but Angel Poppy could hold it furever! Our mom's very first doggie would go on command, but none of us since! We think she learned to do that because our pawrents traveled a lot with her! Good luck with your "problem", Mitchy!

  5. Mitch mah Man!

I CAN go on command, and I used to be much better about it. But I PREFER to go and look for the right place and the right time, which is usually soon after muzzer starts grumpin and groanin about my potty habits. Teka, well, she is out the door and doin her business as fast as possible, then she uses the rest of the time to sniff.

pee ess...I drink a lot of water, but I have the bladder of a camel, so when I let go, you better plan on waiting a bit.

  6. Oh Mitch, I'm not a boy but a girl, can I say something here too?
I can hold my peepee from 9pm to 7am like you too, my dad always gets mad at me if I don't do it on his demand. My mom is slightly better, she will just leave me and said,'what to do? she doesn't want to do it.' She is sweeter, isn't she?
I chose my peepee and poopoo spot too, I have my favourite spots and I can only do both of them there. That's why my humans get headache if they takes me out for a sleepover. I just can't do my toilets because i don't have my toilet with me!!! So I hold both of them and my mom gets so stressed. I try too but I just can't!!! Guess I'm a boy now!!!

  7. Uh, I's not a boy but brudder Albert is and lemme say...he can hold it too! But he was trained to go in a specific part of da yard.

  8. I can hold it for a LONG time, too! And sometimes when we go outside I like to pee-dawdle, as Old Girl calls it, but it's mostly because I don't want to go back inside.
Sometimes, if it's really cold, Old Girl will finally say, "Fred. GO." And I usually will.
    Good luck!

  9. Hi Mitch ...Webster here. Well I sometimes only ever go peepee's twice a day. Night time I sometimes go from 10pm to 11ish in a morning. I am a late riser unlike the others here.

As for you know who..Teddy Boy everytime one of the girls goes he goes. So you can imagine he used to go very often! Misguided youth!

So the answer here is now we don't peepee on request! LOL

It's good to find just the right place to mark...hehe! I'm pretty good at that! Hey, the other day my sister lifted her leg like a boy...Mom just about died laughing :) Stanzie is such an Alpha Girl!

  11. I am pretty much with Kess on this issue - I go if I need too and don't if I don't. In general male dogs seem to be more scent orientated and need to find just that perfect spot to mark their territory on.

  12. Hi Mitch, hmmm I think I understand but if I take too long to answer your mom's question - well she might tell me to hurry along too. So here it goes (no pun intended), my mom and dad have a regular schedule for me, so I pretty much go when they want me to. I don't drink much water either so that limits my pee. My brother Owen takes his time too. But he goes within 5 minutes of being outside. The shelties (boy and girl) are quick - they do their stuff and want to get back inside, especially if it's raining. I don't think that I could hold stuff inside me as long as you do. You might want to consider doing by yourself because your mom might start "expressing your bladder" and starting your poo for you.

  13. Piper has to pee on every fencepost up our road- Mom thinks he will fall over from dehydration. He's the one who keeps us out in the cold - BRRR!! So we have no advice for you, but are interested in hearing what others day.

  14. I'm just like you Mitch, I find a good walk gets things moving! and I can hold onto pees for a very long time :) even after being in my bedroom over night I'm not asking to go out first thing. I think you are nomal.
Hope mom gives you a break

  15. Hello, Mitch. Ranger here. Like you, I generally take longer to "do my business" than my little sister. On a walk, I can't say that I really have that problem, as I like to leave reminders of who owns this or that bush or mailbox, if you get my drift.

But in my back yard, it's a different story. Especially if I have just gone 6-8 hours before. Honestly, there are much more important things to do, such as checking the perimeter and making sure there have been no breaches. Like you, I drink very little and can hold it for many hours. I consider it good training if an emergency should arise that would require me to hold it for days at a time.

All this is to say that you are a perfectly normal and tough man-dog and your mother should be grateful for this particular talent of yours.

  16. We had the same problem with Lola. She is so picky with her poop spots and is distracted by anything outside. What we've found works is to take her out fewer times throughout the day. She has to hold it longer than she's used to and when she goes out, thats the only thing on her mind. Cooper goes on command. And he's always been an in and out kinda guy. We love that! Good Luck

  17. My asst. says welcome to her world....... isn't she the funny one?! Okay, so yes, I'm very particular about where I do my thing. I have to be taken for a walk and eventually I'll sniff out an inviting spot. I will never, ever go in my own yard. That's just not right. BOL
As far as peeing...... I belong to the camp that pees on ANYthing and EVERYthing to the point of ridiculous (I just to it to annoy the asst.:)

  18. Holly is a girl so we don't have really good advice on the matter. She doesn't know what peeing on demand is though but she does hold it forever and has to find very good spots to poo. Lots of love, Debbie and Holly

  19. Mitch I think it's a guy thing! Nothing wrong with you big guy, nope, not at all. Sorry you gotta hear all your sissy's praises all the time...gah! I'm just a puppy, well pretty much so, I hold it from 9pm until 7am or later!! And you wanna hear something odd.....I never ever pee or poo on walkies!! No sir, when there is a leash on me, I just can't do it. Guess I like my yard best to potty in ;) So hold your head high Mitch!! You're a fine fella who knows when he has to go!

  22. Phantom can hold forever if he just doesn't want to go outside. But since we just get let out in the morning to the fenced yard, we all usually take care of business right away and then do our morning patrol of the perimeter. Both Ciara and TD would pee and poop on command when they were going through the potty training, but Mom let it go and is sorry now.

    Good luck.

I too can hold my pee forever Mom says.. Poopies comes when I am ready. If I don't go Mom just lets me back in since I would never have an accident in the house..

  24. Well, I know the feeling. I get easily distracted and forget what I'm supposed to be doing. I sniff here and there, tree a squirrel or pluck a chicken, then go back inside. Before you know it, I've got to right back out again. Mom says I have an attention span problem. I'm sorry, what was the question...?

  25. Well, I must admit that Beth has trained me well. I pee and go boom boom on command. I don't know when it happened but it did.... I heard her tell someone she didn't like having to wait all the time.... Sounds to me like you know what you are doing! You are a free spirit....continue, my friend! I wish I were more like you....

  26. Hmm Mitch, I'm just like you. I can hold my bladder from 9pm until 7am the next day. When I go for my walkies, I love to sniff around and take my own time to pee. If I'm at home and I need to go, I will go sit next to the door, whine for a bit and my humans will let me out to the garden for me to relieve myself.

  27. Well, I do pee pretty much right away when I go outside, at any time of day or weather conditions. But pooping is another story-Most of the time I poop on walks, and I turn and circle around about 2000 times before i actually poop. I hear PU mumble under her breath that she's aging in a major way just waiting for me to poop!

    Hope this helps:-)

  28. Jake here. I can hold it forever, if I want to. Like from 8:00 at night until Moma rolls me outta bed at 10:00 AM. No kidding. But then ... during the day ... if I'm bored or annoyed? Well. Moma says sometimes I have a bit of a problem. I think you know what I mean.

And outside. I can go anywhere. The streets of NYC. The beaches of Florida. The mountains of Colorado. The (designated) pine straw spot. The (designated) rocks spot. But given rain? Or, worse yet, thunder? Nope. No way. I'll hold it forever.

Now. Next question. Do you squat? I often do. (blush)

The boys Toby & Jeter don't care who sees - they perform on command like Maggie. All 4 dogs in the pack are thankfully good household citizens too...

  34. Well, Mitch, we hear ya buddy! Guys have more responsibility than girls - SO we have to make sure the coast is clear and everyone's safe before we do our business, right? See, the girls know we got their backs, so they have the luxury of not having to worry about that stuff. Or something like that. Explain it to your mom that way and we're sure she'll understand. Sounds good, doesn't it?

  35. Well, I sympathize and I'm a girlDale. I prefer to save my poops for our daily walk, even if I have to wait until afternoon. I start to feel a little tingle, so I stop and think about it. Mom never gives me enough time to think; she wants to keep walking. On the third or fourth try, I'm ready--usually at the farthest point of our walk so that Mom has to carry the poop bag all the way home. She mutters lots of bad words sometimes. Hee hee.

  36. Fudge can and does pee every time he walks out the door. He also has to save some so he can overpee every one else. Noah is a lot the same. Sky will only pee in his own yard, but he'll water everything in the yard.

Tsar, the cat dog only pees twice a day, first thing in the morning and last thing at night. He doesn't pee on vegetation. He has an amazing bladder.

I think a lot has to do with pack rank. Fudge is top male and he wants everyone to know it.

so I guess there is no easy answer for either dogs or humans!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Can't believe we missed this important request for help.

Our conclusion, Mitchy, you are perfectly normal -- at least if I Just Harry can testify on your behalf. I and my brother will hold it overnight with no trouble -- sometimes from 7:30 or 8 pm until 7:30 or 8 am -- and even later. Then when I go out -- I have to find just the right spot to pee. And I'll do it in a series of three stops. As for #2 -- sometimes I'll go and sometimes I won't. Have to find just the right spot by rubbing my muzzle against the ground. Amd if there are distractions -- noises, other pups, ec. -- forget it!! See, just like what you described.

As for my brother -- he's like a machine: one long pee right out of the gate, and then a long revved up run like an airplacne getting ready to take off, and then poop action!
Totally different habits -- although on very rare occasions, our Dogdad has reported instances of simultaneous pooping. Unrecorded, however.

    Wirey love,

    Just Harry

  43. Hi Uncle Mitchie... Its not just a boy thing. My name is Rocky and I pee and poop on command because I like my cookies. My sister Leah though, she is the one that gives this look like the hoomans are trying to be mean by making her go out in the cold snow and ice. She will hold it until it literally falls out when the hoomans are finally able to push her out the door. We understand that its cold and that air on our furbutts does not feel good. Maybe we should try to make the hoomans go outside?

  46. Hey Mitchie
Hmmm girls are so worried about everything. Okay- so I don't have a backyard so Momma has me on a routine for our walkies. I don't pee or poop on command but usually have endless pee for 1-2 hour long walkies. I do have to find the right spot and sometimes spend 3 minutes sniffing it, scratching it and then nothing or a healthy squirt. My momma says I'm more about marking my walkies route than anything. Pooping i'm very particular. I like to poop with my butt high on a tree, on TOP of a snow bank, i've even pooped on another dog's pile of poop- gross. Momma thinks I'm always trying to be top dog with these weird places. I also pee on top of Tula's pee when she walks with me. Do you do that to Maggie's? Tell your momma not to worry. Boys are just like that.

Now we don't think this is a gender issue at all.
You know Martha goes out at night and runs about sniffing to see who has been in the garden since her last trip - she completely forgets to pee!
This is very annoying at bedtime.
Now Bailey knows why she is out and gets on with it but Martha ......no......it is fine to wake your humans up through the night if you need to.....!
