This wood is cherry and mom finds it to be one of the hardest woods to carve. Your tools have to be very sharp and there is almost no room for error, meaning that if you chip it, it's hard to sand it away and disguise the booboo.
This piece of cherry wood was sitting in our basement for at least 5 years. Dad brought it in from the workshop to be used in one of our Sunday fires in the fireplace and every week when we brought wood from the basement to our family room to burn, mom just couldn't bring herself to sacrifice this piece of cherry.
The plan was to make a cherry Maggie dish seeing as the wood has probably been on our property for as long as Maggie lived here.
The wood had a warp to it and mom knew it and she wasn't careful enough when she was sanding it and the neck snapped. Mom was just sick because she'd put so much time into it and because all she did was think of Maggie while she was working on it.
Mom asked for dad's help fixing it because she had no clue how to make it sturdy enough to continue and not have it keep breaking.
It's finished and it's just lovely and mom is so very pleased!
This is the cherry patch that dad helped mom to fashion on the back of the dish.
Thank you so very much, dad! You made mom very happy.
So we have one more AireDish to add to My Maggie's memory.
A few days ago a small package arrived in the mail. It's from
Lacie, Scruffy and Stan.
It's a gorgeous handblown Airedale and mom and dad just love it! Thank you so very much, guys! You are so thoughtful and considerate to do this.
And I just love the card! It looks just like LacieCakes!
You guys are just too sweet! Thank you so very, very much!
Love ya lots,
Mitch
