Our dad's latest and greatest idea is that our pond needs an island so that the waterfowl can nest safely and comfortably if they'd like to~
The excavator is placing tons of huge rocks into the pond and stacking them until they are above the water level. Dad says our pond is 6 foot deep in places so it took a lot of rocks!
Fast forward - our friend Darin brought us a huge truckload of wood chips and the excavator spread them all over the top of the rocks and dirt like icing on a cake.
The mallards are already checking out the new island but the only customers we've seen on the island so far are turtles!
The excavator is all set to head home. OMG, this thing is HUGE!
That's our Smoke Tree in front of the excavator. Isn't it pretty!
This is a close up of the smokes. They feel so soft~
The black swan brothers are doing great!
And the mute swan sissies have a new barnacle goose bodyguard!
We had a Canada goose mom and dad here earlier in the year and they had 2 goslings. We had an incident recently that scared all of the birds and they took off for the afternoon. They all came back except for Mr and Mrs Canada goose and 1 gosling. We discovered that one gosling was still here and he was crying for his mom and dad and sibling.
Guess who the new gosling's mom and dad are? Fatassloudmouth and her mate!
They're actually great parents and they stepped up the plate to foster this gosling when he needed help! They guard the little guy with their lives like he was their very own.
awwwwwwwwww
So until next time.............
Love ya lots♥

Wow, those excavators are huge! And the smoke tree looks so pretty. Hope you get more visitors to your island!
ReplyDeleteI love reading about the birds who live on your property. I'm always taken back to childhood and the folk stories we were told.
ReplyDeletethey birdies are probably just waiting for the island to settle - maybe it needs a few reeds or a plant or too so they don't feel like they are sitting out in the open. Love the black swans - they are so beautiful
ReplyDeleteWow the island is going to be great. So glad Fatassloudmouth and her mate have taken on the little gosling. Looks like all is happy and well on your pond. Have a marvellous Monday.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
An island is a great idea! We bet the birdies will enjoy hanging out there when they get used to it.

I have a smoke bush too, didn't know that it could get so big. Mine did well this year but isn't anywhere as big as yours. Glad the little Canada goose has some foster parents to look after him.
ReplyDeleteWe love seeing how your wildlife are doing. We think they are going to love that island. Mom says she doesn't think we would do too well with geese and swans and ducks:(

Hi Mitch & Molly
ReplyDeleteSorry for not visiting in AGES!!! We keep trying to catch up with blogs but just always seem to keep falling behind.
We did pop by the other day, actually, and caught up on your posts about your special visitors. I tried to leave a comment then but I think Blogger swallowed it up. :-( (Oh! And I've had chicken feet too - although mine were freeze-dried - they were fresh, from the butcher's in Chinatown - and they're like crunchy chips - YUM! Lots of good natural glucosamine & chondroitin too!)
Anyway, we loved looking at the pictures in this post - wow, I didn't realise you had your very own pond! How cool is that??!! There is a beautiful park near our house where we walk sometimes and it has a small lake - with many birds. And some resident black swans. We always think of you whenever we walk there and see them! :-)
Slobbers,
Honey the Great Dane
Your Pops has the most BRILLIANT ideas!!! I'm sure the burdies will take to the island in no time.
ReplyDeleteThat tree is amazin'! Now Ma wants one....
All the swans look gorgeous ~ and what a sweet pair, adopting the little gosling! It sure IS an 'awwwwe' situation!
Kisses,
Ruby ♥

It must be fascinating to watch all those birds! Can you plant anything on or around the island? It'd look pretty with a little tree and flowers. :D
