A Stressful Christmas

On Christmas day, something happened that really stressed mom and dad out.   I had blood clots and fresh bloody drips coming out of my mouth.  When mom raised my jowl and saw tumors and yuckiness she was really panicked! I wasn't in any pain but you know how whigged moms can get!  Why do these things always have to happen on a holiday?
It wasn't long before mom was on the computer typing in "oral cancer" to try and find out just how serious this new problem was going to be.
Yesterday afternoon, I went to see my vet.  They weighed me first - I'm 50 pounds!  Mom was really pleasantly surprised about this seeing as I do have kidney disease.  I do eat like a horse, ya know, mom!
Dr. A checked out my mouth, which was really not fun but I let him do his thing.   He told mom and dad that I have a stage 4 heart murmur and he told them that a full blood panel should be done and chest x-rays should be done to make sure that I don't have active cancer and then the ugly growth could be removed.
Well, I'm 13.5 years old and I'm basically a very happy girl most of the time.  I have many aches and pains getting up from a reclining position and I have problems walking from point A to point B a lot of time.
Mom and dad are not going to do the x-ray and they're not going to do bloodwork and they're not going to do surgery.  They're going to let me live my life in peace and if and when life gets uncomfy for me, I have tramadol and if it gets really uncomfy and painful for me then we'll cross that bridge when the time comes.

Mitch and I eat holiday cake every day after our walkies.  We still have lots left, Sunshade, and we are sure loving it!
Dad took us all to Glenwood for burgers and fries the day after Christmas and yesterday after my vet appointment we had pizza.
Life is good for me for now and I'm liking it.

Our mom has a new project. Not only is she helping dad with the Crump cupola but she's also going to tackle repainting our dining room so she has enough to do now to keep her mind focused and not so much free time to worry about me.

Because, we have been so stressed  prior to seeing the vet, we have been reading blogs but not commenting and we apologize for this.   We'll try to do better.

Love ya lots,
Miss Maggie

  5. Growing old is the pits - but you have done it with such grace and wonder that we all have come to love you. You are a young one at heart at that is what matters the most and we will keep our paws crossed for you that any nasty old pain leaves you alone and you get to enjoy more treats for quite while to come.

We agree too - your Mom and Dad are doing the right thing and putting YOU first. It is hard sometimes for us humans, they want to keep us around as long as possible but it all comes down to the quality of life - not the quantity and that makes every day special.

  6. O Maggie- that sounds horrid and also upsetting for your Mum and Dad. It seems best though not to put you thro' nasty treatment. Just keep on loving life and making the most of every day.*hugs*

  40. Hi "S", Maggie and Mitch, we know that your mom and dad made the right decision and will always do what is in your best interests. There are at least 40 posts ahead of ours already, I think that speaks to how many people really care about what happens to Maggie and how many hold you and your family dear. You're always welcome up here, we could round up Sunshade and her evil mum and then we could all go for walkies together along the seawall in West Vancouver. Sound like a date? Dad said he'll bring along some wild salmon jerky. You'll like that.

  46. Dear Miss Maggie,

I'm sorry your family had a stressy Christmas, but I'm glad they have decided on a plan of focusing on the fun bits (like food treats and being with those you love) and ignoring the horrible bits (like surgery and tests when your vet probably already knows the results).

Just remember to make sure you and Mitch give your humans extra fur therapy (if they seem stressed) by getting lots of pats, hugs and extra grooming from them. I've found this always calms my mum down whenever she starts to worry, as she stops worring about "the future" and is then able to enjoy and appreciate "the now".

So sorry to hear that you are not feeling great. Stage 4 heart murmurs sound like something serious enough for everybody to spoil you, give you lots of treats, and basically let you do what you want.

Full blood panels and chest X-rays aren't much fun either, and who needs them at your age anyway? (Sorry, I didn't mean that as a wisecrack about being old.) Looks to me like you're doing pretty good. Sure sounds like you are eating good. Great!

So, Maggie my friend, hang in there and enjoy every minute you've got. We love you. We love Mitch, and we love your Mom and Dad.
