A Stressful Christmas

On Christmas day, something happened that really stressed mom and dad out.   I had blood clots and fresh bloody drips coming out of my mouth.  When mom raised my jowl and saw tumors and yuckiness she was really panicked! I wasn't in any pain but you know how whigged moms can get!  Why do these things always have to happen on a holiday?
It wasn't long before mom was on the computer typing in "oral cancer" to try and find out just how serious this new problem was going to be.
Yesterday afternoon, I went to see my vet.  They weighed me first - I'm 50 pounds!  Mom was really pleasantly surprised about this seeing as I do have kidney disease.  I do eat like a horse, ya know, mom!
Dr. A checked out my mouth, which was really not fun but I let him do his thing.   He told mom and dad that I have a stage 4 heart murmur and he told them that a full blood panel should be done and chest x-rays should be done to make sure that I don't have active cancer and then the ugly growth could be removed.
Well, I'm 13.5 years old and I'm basically a very happy girl most of the time.  I have many aches and pains getting up from a reclining position and I have problems walking from point A to point B a lot of time.
Mom and dad are not going to do the x-ray and they're not going to do bloodwork and they're not going to do surgery.  They're going to let me live my life in peace and if and when life gets uncomfy for me, I have tramadol and if it gets really uncomfy and painful for me then we'll cross that bridge when the time comes.

Mitch and I eat holiday cake every day after our walkies.  We still have lots left, Sunshade, and we are sure loving it!
Dad took us all to Glenwood for burgers and fries the day after Christmas and yesterday after my vet appointment we had pizza.
Life is good for me for now and I'm liking it.

Our mom has a new project. Not only is she helping dad with the Crump cupola but she's also going to tackle repainting our dining room so she has enough to do now to keep her mind focused and not so much free time to worry about me.

Because, we have been so stressed  prior to seeing the vet, we have been reading blogs but not commenting and we apologize for this.   We'll try to do better.

Love ya lots,
Miss Maggie

(But seriously... why Christmas? Sissy went blind in the now-gone left eye last Christmas Eve. Another friend's dog went blind on Christmas Day this year...)

  26. Oh dear sweet Maggie, we are so sad to read this news. And yes, why do things always have to happen on the weekend or on holidays! We are so sorry you have to have these issues in your golden years. Mom says she totally understands your parents' thinking - we are doing the same here for Phantom. Paws crossed for you to have many more good days ahead of you.

  29. Maggie, while all that sucks we are glad you are doing okay and you have your parents looking out for you. I love you guys.

  30. Through all of these thingys that are going on ... the thingy that stands out MOST.. is that you are SO LOVED. Loved enough to make the bestest decision... for YOU. It is NEVER the NUMBER of Days we have.. it is ALWAYS the QUALITY of them.
You have the mostest LOVING Mom.
I have my paws crossed fur you and am sending you my best
    Frankie Furter

  31. Dearest Maggie! Yep, stuff like this always happens during the howl-a-daze. You have great folks who love you so much and it makes my heart smile to think about their care of you. And you know what? We all love you, too! Ma-wah! Keep your Airedalean spirit, it will carry you through anything. Maybe your Mom will remember that she has Airedalean spirit too.
    Woofs & Licks,

    Duke and the other Hooligans

  32. There comes a time in life when the best cure is just staying at home with your family .

  33. Woo, Maggie! Me and Zim love you (and your brother and mom and dad) so much - and we're sorry to hear about all of this. BUT we know that you are living life to the fullest and you're surrounded by love and that is absolutely the BEST, isn't it?!?
Enjoy each and every day - that's what life is about. And we have a mighty strong feeling that's what you all do anyway! Woo.

I'm firmly in my thoughts with you.
    Our paws crossed for you.

    Nice woooh

  35. Miss Maggie, we understand. Our Miss Morgan is in much the same situation. She has aches and pains and some things inside that we don't want to think about, but we're just making sure that she's happy and has lots of love and snacks.

We're all thinking about you and hope you continue to feel good for a long, long time.
    Morgan, Tsar and the Porties

  36. Dear Maggie we are so sorry about your latest health worries. This has been a very hard month in our dog community. We know you are in very competent & loving care. We know your mom & dad will do right by you & we are here to offer what support we can dear girl.

Sending love to you (& tramadol does work wonders!) & many special prayers for you to be comfy xoxoxo

  37. Oh Maggie, we are so sad to hear this news. But Mama totally understands about these things. She let Angel Snickers & Angel Butchy go as long as they could too, not doing surgeries, etc. Our vet never likes to do surgeries when us doggies are older and have problems, he says it's just not worth it most of the time. Why put us in more pain than we already have. We know that eventually we all leave this earth for a better place. So live it up while you are here Maggie. Enjoy everything and everyone. When your time comes to leave us, Angel Butchy will be waiting for you!
    Wirey Hugs, Purrz & Licks,
Katie, Sparky, Ruby, Sylvester, Scuby, Hootie & Zeek

  38. Hey Maggie! We love that your mom and dad are putting your comfort first! Enjoy each and every day!!

ps from Jeannie to your Mama - sorry to read about this, and my heartfelt thoughts and good wishes are winging their way to you my friend.

    Love and hugs, Jeannie xxxxxx

  40. Maggie, one of the reasons we've slowed down on reading blogs is because our Mom has been worried about you, but when she saw you and your peeps have such a great attitude about things, it really lifted her spirits!

The Rocky Creek Scotties and Ivy

  41. Hi "S", Maggie and Mitch, we know that your mom and dad made the right decision and will always do what is in your best interests. There are at least 40 posts ahead of ours already, I think that speaks to how many people really care about what happens to Maggie and how many hold you and your family dear. You're always welcome up here, we could round up Sunshade and her evil mum and then we could all go for walkies together along the seawall in West Vancouver. Sound like a date? Dad said he'll bring along some wild salmon jerky. You'll like that.

  42. Oh dear, precious Maggie, sorry you all had to go through all of this right now. I'm glad to hear you are eating well. Your mom and dad obviously love you furry furry much. Sending lots of healing, loving blessings your way.

  43. Oh goodness, I'm stressing just reading this but trying to keep in mind all the healthy years you've had. Your mom and dad are fortunate to have had you with them for longer than the average Airedale.

  44. Oh Dear Miss Maggie im so sorry to hear about your sickies but so glad your parents and just going to take it one day at a time. We are sending lots of slbber kisses your way and we will keep our paws crossed.

  45. Yes, these things DO happen on holidays.

You're following the same course we did for Kendra. Why subject an older dog to so much trauma just to eek out a few more months....probably recovering from all the intervention.

Maggie, you just enjoy the rest of your life, girl.

    XXXOOO Daisy, Bella & Roxy

Oh, and we're sending our best wishes and prayers.

  46. Hi Miss Maggie, mum sends you special hugs cause you remind her of our old sissy, angel Kara. We don't know what mum is talking about cause Kara was an English Cocker Spaniel and you are an Airedale but mum is a bit coo coo like that. Anyhoo, we want to say keep on having fun Maggie. We love ya lots too. Take care all. No worries, and extra love, Stella and Rory (and Carol)

  47. Dear Miss Maggie,

I'm sorry your family had a stressy Christmas, but I'm glad they have decided on a plan of focusing on the fun bits (like food treats and being with those you love) and ignoring the horrible bits (like surgery and tests when your vet probably already knows the results).

Just remember to make sure you and Mitch give your humans extra fur therapy (if they seem stressed) by getting lots of pats, hugs and extra grooming from them. I've found this always calms my mum down whenever she starts to worry, as she stops worring about "the future" and is then able to enjoy and appreciate "the now".

    Love and woofs,

  48. Dear Maggie,

We are so sorry that you are not feeling so well right now. We have all our paws crossed for you. Moms do get freaked out but give her some good airedale love and she will calm down.

    Your friends,
    Niamh & Ambrose

  49. Miss Maggie, we are sorry to hear that Christmas was so stressful, but it sounds like your mom and dad are thinking really hard about you. I'm glad they love you so much! Take care and enjoy every day with no regrets!

  52. Yep, Moms can get crazy but its cause they loves us soooo much.

Seems to me that your Moms is doin the most perfectest thing in the worlds fur YOU! I thinks your Mom is right, it is the quality of life not the length.

I is keepin my paws crossed that you feel grrrrreat fur a LONG time!

    woos, Tessa

    - Clive, Murray and Fiona

  56. Oh Maggie, we are so sorry that you all had a stressful Christmas. We hope you aren't in too much pain. We're sending lots of hugs.

I know your mom and dad want only the best for you and want you to enjoy life as long as you desire to stay around.

We had a health scare here too on Christmas day with one of the senior kitties. I am happy to report she is making some progress.

Sending hugs and we know you still have some precious memories to make with your family before you leave us.

  59. Mango and Dexter sent us over. You poor things. We're purring that everything clears up quickly and that you have a Happy Healthy and Fun Filled New Year. Meow from Malaysia!

  60. Sending lots of love and good vibes to sweet Maggie !

  61. Hi Maggie!

So sorry to hear that you are not feeling great. Stage 4 heart murmurs sound like something serious enough for everybody to spoil you, give you lots of treats, and basically let you do what you want.

Full blood panels and chest X-rays aren't much fun either, and who needs them at your age anyway? (Sorry, I didn't mean that as a wisecrack about being old.) Looks to me like you're doing pretty good. Sure sounds like you are eating good. Great!

So, Maggie my friend, hang in there and enjoy every minute you've got. We love you. We love Mitch, and we love your Mom and Dad.

Good luck! We hope that the New Year brings better news.

Love and Lots of Koobuss Kisses,
    Koobie and Family

pee ess How have those bloody ugly mouth sores been? Did they go away?

  67. BIG AIRE KISSES sweet Miss Maggie!!!!

  68. Oh Maggie. You have the BEST family in the world. They know exactly what you need and want, and, most of all, they know EXACTLY how to show you how much they love you. Let your people (and Mitch, too) savor every moment with you ... and keep making happy memories. (Some ice cream would be nice ... don'tcha think?) And, in the meantime, we'll be wishing for comfy, peaceful, fun-filled days. Lots and lots of them.

Hugs to everyone ... and an especially big one to you!
jake and Fergi, OurMoma and NinaGirl

We've got you in our hearts and are so happy that you're going to take each day as a special gift. Medical interventions sometimes aren't the best way to go. Your peeps are wise.

And, as others have said, don't you worry about barking at us. We know you're there.

Surgery was just out of the question.

I hope you have a good bit of quality time left with Maggie, and we will keep her in out prayers.

    Cheers and hugs all around,
Jo, Stella the dog and Zkhat!

  76. I just heard and wanted to stop by and leave some prayers for you, Maggie! Nala and I will be thinking lots of good thoughts!! :)

  78. We read over on Mango man that you have those health issues Maggie. We are very sorry and we will say prayers for you.
    Sweet William The Scot

  79. Oh dear, we're a bit late in reading this, but we wish you all well. We know how difficult it is to make decisions for an aging and beloved member of the family, whether two or four-legged, and whatever your choice, we're with you 100%.

Please give Miss Maggie some extrta hugs for us!

  80. Maggie, my Christmas wish for you is that every day be special. I know you will be living in the moment and not worrying about the future (leave that to the humans). Thank God for modern medications that can be used to make sure you are pain free and enjoying the good things in life as long as possible.

You and your family are now in my daily prayers.

  81. oh I'm so late! Yes I agree with Parlance, everyday is a special day. Kisses and hugs!

  82. I'm so sorry to hear this! Moms can get pretty freaked out (and quickly!) but it sounds like they did the right thing by taking you to the vet and letting you get checked out. Remember to get your rest and let momma baby you for a bit. Even at 13.5 years old you need your momma sometimes :)
