Dad brought the egg inside our house and placed it in a basket. The next day, another egg appeared and dad collected that one too. Egg number 3 was laid too and dad actually saw Agnes lay this one so he's sure it's Agnes laying them and not Hazel.
Dad put the eggs into the incubator and replaced two of the eggs in Agnes's nest with wooden eggs so she wouldn't feel so bad.
A few days later, dad discovered that Agnes had laid another egg so now she's sitting on one "real" egg and 2 dud wooden eggs. Agnes, Buster and Hazel all take turns sitting on the nest but we're pretty sure that all of the eggs belong to Agnes.
If you look closely, you can see the egg underneath Agnes. How come black swans don't lay black eggs? It would make more sense to us.
Buster and Hazel waiting their turn to sit on the eggs. Maybe they'll be parents in the spring?
This is Bella. She never goes inside the swan cottage and we've had VERY cold weather with biting winds lately. There is a heat light inside the house but she prefers to brave the elements. Maybe she/he thinks four is a crowd inside the cottage?
She's preening and loves it outside. Dad finds her/him in the morning with frost on her feathers. She does have a straw nest on the shore where she naps in the daytime but she sleeps in the water at night.
This is the bubbler inside the black swan's fenced in area. It keeps the water defrosted. It causes quite a turbulence. There is another bubbler on the other side of the fence for the other waterfowl.
That's slick ice in front of Margaret and Penny, the Mute swans.
Hi Midgee!!! All of Speckles ducklings are doing great! They're hardy birds and very happy!
Angel Whooper is doing her morning stretches after finishing her breakfast.
Dad says that Bella is less than 2 years old and she's not old enough to be a father if she is, in fact a boy so are the eggs in the incubator going to hatch? Is the egg underneath Agnes going to hatch?
By Valentine's Day, we should know if I'm an uncle and Molly is an auntie.
Are you as confused as we are?!
So until next time...........
Love ya lots♥
Mitch and Molly

ReplyDeleteMonty and Harlow
I'm always confused! But, very excited that you could have some nieces or nephews (!) soon. I luffs those black swans, they are sooo beautiful, but I'll keep my distance especially after the language that swan used to me the other day!

Oh, this is such an interesting story! Yes, we are confused, but we're so looking forward to your help in sorting it all out. Please keep us up to date!

ReplyDeleteEGG Sighting...
Howdy Mates. Oh we hope you do get little babies. How amazing that Bella prefers to stay outside during the cold. We have a little story to tell you. Mum had chooks (chickens) when she was a little girl and all they were all girls. One went clucky and started sitting on the eggs so dad got some fertile ones from our uncle and so she sat on them. The very last night before they hatched she got off the nest and the next day only three hatched. We got a rooster from that little group and he turned out to be mum's nemesis hehehe. Always chased mum when she had to go feed them, yikes! No worries, and love, Stella and Rory
ReplyDeleteBe interesting if the swan is a Bella or a Bela (as in Lugosi)! BOL! Hope you have some little swans in the near future.
ReplyDeleteConfused, yes but I'm excited! Got my paws crossed for the eggs.
ReplyDeleteAroo to you,
Sully
Your swan house is quite the soap opera. We can't wait to see if/when they hatch.
ReplyDeleteWhen I got to the sentence that started with "Dad says that Bella is less than 2 years old and she's not old enough to be a father if she is, in fact a boy..." - I burst out laughing so loudly that my husband came running to find out what was so funny!
ReplyDeleteIt is a soap opera! But I sure hope that some baby geese are born from those eggs!
We can't wait to hear the next chapter of what happens,,, NEXT!

ReplyDeleteWell, blackbirds lay blue-shelled eggs, lol.
ReplyDeleteI love reading about your 'flock'. BTW, I read somewhere recently that swans live a very long life compared to humans. Is that correct?
Also, BTW, your captcha question was hard. I nearly failed to prove I was not a robot.
I hope the eggs hatch and you have some lovely babies. Keep an eye on them Molly hugs Susie & Treacle xx
