We are participating in Louis's Endangered Species challenge today. Louis is Blogville's arts and entertainment director. We accepted this challenge to increase awareness that so many of our beautiful animal brothers and sisters are in danger of completely disappearing from this Earth. We can't let that happen!
For our endangered species, we chose the chimpanzee.
Like us, chimps are highly social animals, care for their offspring
for years and can live to be over 50. In fact, chimpanzees are our
closest cousins; we share about 98 percent of our genes.
In their habitat in the forests of central Africa, chimpanzees
spend most of their days in the tree tops. When they do come down to
earth, chimps usually travel on all fours, though they can walk on their
legs like humans for as far as a mile. They use sticks to fish termites
out of mounds and bunches of leaves to sop up drinking water.
Lately, people enter forests where chimpanzees live. The Chimpanzees
have been getting sick from people's diseases. In addition, people are
hunting the chimpanzees. Their numbers are becoming fewer and fewer.
Thank you, Louis, for giving us the opportunity to let others know about these smart and fun-loving chimps! They're such special animals♥
Love ya lots♥
Molly and Mackie
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Molly and Mackie I love your report on Chimpanzees and don't you look cute with them. I had heard human disease were being taken into the forest but I didn't realize the toll it had taken
ReplyDeleteHugs madi your bfff
We joined in on the Endangered Animals project also. The chimp sure looks happy to be spending some time with you two. To just hunt a species to death is horrid. We have to work now like Noah to save them all.
ReplyDeleteThanks for being a friend

I cannot believe that we forgot about the endangered species day. Bad mama! We have chimpanzee rescue here in our city where chimps that have been used in research are able to retire and live a happy life.
ReplyDeleteMonkey see, monkey do or is it Airedale see, Airedale do????
ReplyDeleteAroo to you,
Sully
Thank you for letting us know about the problems chimps have today because of humans. Mom used to love to go to the MOnkey House at Forest Park in Springfield, MA when she was a little girl and watch all the chimps peel oranges and bananas to eat. Louis's event has been very educational for us today.

That's a very sweet looking chimp. I wish that we humans weren't driving so many species to the brink of extinction our "us first" attitude.

ReplyDeletewhat a great post! I agree with you this funny human-like friends need our protection... the mama always cried when she saw them dressed and forced to do embarrassing things during the 80's in a show...
ReplyDeleteIt's been interesting reading about all the endangered species today. We hope the awareness helps keep them alive.
ReplyDeleteI somehow missed this day and wish I had known about it. I love chimps and I am so sad they are being hurt by human disease and loss of habitat.
ReplyDeleteSusan, it makes me happy to see this post about endangered animals - thank you. And thank you for your comment on the hollyhocks-to-be. It's really going to be slow - a fussy, detailed work.
