A Sad Day

Remember back before Christmas some of us did postings about the towns we live in?

Sunday night, just about the time mom and dad were heading to bed we heard fire engines!
We live close to a very busy street and there are accidents every once in awhile. Mom and dad assumed that there had been another accident and the fire truck was going to hose the gasoline off the road. NOPE! The next morning, mom was heading out to run errands and she heard on the radio - not more than 30 seconds before she witnessed it - that our beloved Northford Store had burned! Thank goodness for the radio warning or mom would have run off the road in shock!

This is our cute little country grocery store in the autumn and now it's burned to the ground! We are devastated to say the least!

Mom and dad have lived in Northford for over 30 years! They moved to this town when mom was 9 months pregnant with my sister, Missy, so this store has been a part of our lives for many years and now it's gone - forever gone!

The taller portion of the building that you can see in the back was built 138 years ago and when mom and dad first moved to town, the addition in the front hadn't been built yet and you actually shopped in the old portion of the store and walked on wooden floors! It was like an old time general store and it was so awesome!

So a part of Northford's history has also been destroyed and this is so sad! The owner says that the store will be rebuilt but it can never be the same - you can't replace history! The cause of the fire hasn't been determined yet. The fire marshall is still hard at work on the case!

On a happier note~

Dad and his buddies left on a 4 day mini-vacation this morning and we're hoping that mom has lots of fun adventures planned for us! You already know that mom eats stoopid stuff when dad is away so we're hoping that she will be preparing all sorts of junk food meals and sharing with us bigtime!

We're in luck tonight! Guess what's for dinner?

While mom was busy preparing the waffles, we were scootching around!

And as promised, mom did share with us! You stay over there, Mitch! This forkfull is mine!

Awesome dinner, mom! Wonder what's for dinner tomorrow?!

So until next time...............

Love ya lots,

Maggie and Mitch

  19. Oh no Maggie & Mitch that is such a real shame about the store. Hopefully they can rebuild it in the same style at least.
In the 1950's a big fire went through our town which had loads of houses built around 1910. They were replaced with 50's & 60's cottages so we lost many grand houses...such a pity.
You two look after your pinky while your dads away.

  24. That's so sad that building burned down. This summer a place called DeWeese lodge burned down in my town. Mom was really sad because she's lived here about 15 years and she's always wanted to see in the building and the people that just bought had just finished renovating it to turn it into a bed and breakfast and were actually away shopping for furniture to furnish it. The people said they're going to rebuild it, too, but it won't be the same. The building was also over 100 years old and president Roosevelt had stayed in it!
You're so lucky! When my Dad goes away fro awhile, mom eats veggies because Dad doesn't like veggies so when Dad is gone, Mom gets her veggie fix. i'm going to make sure she reads your blog so she knows what she's supposed to eat!

  25. Oh goodness, what terrible news :(
I hope no-one was hurt, but you are right, history cannot be rebuilt so it is very sad for your town :(
My Dad leaves for a 4 day camping and fishing trip on the 21st with his buddies so i'm looking forward to seeing what Mum has planned for me and the little beans, hope you have lots of fun time with your Mom while your Dad is away and don't miss him too much.

Those waffles look completely scrumptious.. I'm going to go nibble Mum's arm and see if i can't persuade her to make me some :)

    love, licks and tail wags,

  27. It's so sad when an old landmark is destroyed - it can never be replaced.
On Christmas Eve morning, we had a similar kind of fire in our town - one of the old landmark restaurants went up in flames and the 60 mph winds threatened to take out the whole side of the street's businesses. It had such character with it's sloping floors, old rafters and all. It's so empty and weird looking now. The whole downtown is an historical district; they're going to try to rebuild it, but the old woodwork, etc can't really be replaced. We're sure it's the same with your old store.

  32. We are glad no one was hurt, but that's just awful about the store! We have a restaurant, here, that used to be a house. It was built some time in the early 1800's. Last year, it burned down and even though they tried to make it look the same when they rebuilt it, somehow it just isn't quite the same! Glad you got some waffles! I bet they were pawsome!

  33. How very tragic to lose your quaint country store with all its history! I'll bet when it's rebuilt, the owners would love a framed print of the photo you took of it earlier.

  34. Hi Maggie and Mitch!

Oh now! The fire looks awful! No one was hurt, were they? We sure hope not!

You both are so cool and so much like us. Everytime Paul goes away on business Jen lets us eat all kinds of great cuisine (she SAYS it is junk but we think it is an epicurian delight!) AND...she lets us sleep on the bed with her.

Now don't get us wrong...we love Paul! Yes we do~! But it is a special kind of fun when he's gone. WOOF WOOF!
