To our friend, Lisa, who reads our blog - please don't read any further~~
We are pretty upset - our dad most of all. His beloved Gussie, his precious black swan was found - actually, Gussie wasn't found - a pile of feathers and a pool of blood was found.
Mom went to check on Buster, Gussie's mate. The pictures are blurry because Buster was moving quickly and probably not sure what to make of any of this. We know that he is lost and misses Gussie. The boys were best buddies.
Buster wouldn't come over to the shore. He's heading back to Gilligan's Island to search. We feel as horrible for Buster as we do for Gussie. Just to let you all know, Gussie didn't lose his life on Gilligan's Island. He and Buster were back up at this end of the pond where dad feeds them. Every couple of days, when the boys got hungry, they'd come back up and eat dindin and head back to the other end of the pond for the rest of the time. They were very happy back there all alone.
We think that a predator approached and Gussie was protecting Buster and lost his life doing so. Gussie was only 2 years old.
Fly high, Gussie. You were a beautiful boy.
Myrtle is waiting to welcome you at Rainbow Bridge. You will be together forever.
We'll miss you.
Love ya lots,
Mitch and Molly, Mom, Dad and Buster
That's so sad. Poor confused Buster.

I know how it feels. Waterfowl seem to be more at risk than chickens because they don't go indoors at night. Do you have coyotes there? What else could be big enough to kill a swan?
ReplyDeleteWe are so sorry. Sw im with the wind Gussie.

ReplyDeleteSo sad to hear this!
ReplyDeleteSo sad. When my daughter and I were in Rome, we were walking around a pond and saw a dead male duck in the water; a female and one little duckling would not leave his body - they kept quacking at him and nudging his body. There were a lot of white feathers near him; we think he fought one of the big white swans to protect the duckling - there may have been more ducklings before, too :( Nature is harsh, and it is terribly sad...
