One of My Greatest Fears

Don't laugh too hard but one of my greatest fears is the housefly.
If I hear one, my tail goes between my legs and I RUN!
I don't care where I run to - I just NEED to get away and find a safe place when he can't get me!
Mom was reading online that "Flies hate the smell of essential oils like lemon grass, peppermint, lavender and eucalyptus – put a few drops in a spray bottle and use around the house daily."

So she mixed up a batch and sprayed it all over the screen door - inside and out and all over the siding that's close to the back door.    Can you see the duct tape on the screen?  It's plugging up any holes where a fly might be able to get inside my house.   Mom spends lots of $$ on duct tape☺
This will be the next thing that she does:

"I did a bit of research on this and it has actually been popular for years.   Flies have compound eyes with thousands of tiny lenses.   Their eyes are especially good at picking up movement.   One theory is that when a fly sees the reflection of the sun off of the water, they perceive it as movement and stay away.   I noticed that when we do get a rogue fly inside, it is often an overcast day.

Fly-Away How To:

1.  Fill a plastic sandwich bag about 1/3 full of water.fly away StephanieBlue
2.  Add a penny.
3. Seal, fold and tape the top to prevent any leaks.
4.  Place inside a 2nd plastic bag.
5.  Cinch and tie.
6.  Hang over doors on the exterior of your home."

She bought a flyswatter and she uses it and I stay by her side to encourage her to "GET HIM!"
I think I hear him in the bedroom end, mom.  HURRY!
Because I have a fear of flies and thunderstorms and fireworks and umbrellas and who knows what else because mom says that I create new fears daily, she decided to give these treats a whirl and see if maybe they will work for me.
We are hoping that SOMETHING will work!  Mom says that she has never known an Airedale with so many fears before.
We will let you know how it goes.

Love ya lots♥
Molly

  2. My cousin Benny, a giant Lab mix, is terrified of flies too. If you buzz at him, he'll run away and hide.

  5. Dear Molly that is a well founded fear you have too....my mom has it but we call hers a genetic obsession. You see she got it from her Annie Ma aka her mom's Mother. Annie Ma hated flies...any time she saw one the very first thing out of her mouth was "don't let it land on your food, BECAUSE you it was probably sitting on something disgusting just minutes before. Not to mention the aggravating buzz they make and they are in your face bugs.

  7. I had a discussion of how to help Shyla with her fears with my vet the other day. Her first choice of what to try (aside from all the behavioral training that we do) is to try a supplement called Solliquin. I just ordered it to try with Shyla. It's fairly pricey... but the vet said that it doesn't have to be used every day - if you see that particularly scary event is going to happen on a certain day, you can give it just on the day before that day and on that day. However, that doesn't sound like it will work for you or Shyla because you both have fears of things that can happen any day. After Shyla gets over her current little illness, I am going to start giving it every day. If you're interested, I can tell you how it goes.

The other thing that we plan to try is CBD oil. There haven't been studies of whether it helps dog fears yet but several friends have reported great results with their fearful dogs.

I sure hope that your mom can keep those flies under control, Molly! R hates them too but not as much as you do.

  8. Oh Molly I am sorry you have all these fears but Treacle is freaked out by a door clicking in the latch. When a door is not closed properly and the wind blows and it keeps clicking against the latch she really is frightened of that.

Have you tried a product called Adaptill for dogs and it is a plug in diffuser which produces a calming scent which mimics a dogs natural calming pheromones. You can get it from Amazon and it's about $21. It might be worth a go to see if it helps. I used to use it with Kelly and she hated fireworks and I felt it was better than giving her tablets.

Hope you catch that pesky fly soon.

    Hugs, Susie x

  9. Oh, Molly! We totally understand. Our mom said our great-sister Stormy was afraid of flies. Only when they were in the house, not outside. We hope everything works that your mom is trying!

  10. Don't ever come to Oz. The flies are in plague proportion in summer. Mostly they seem to arrive in gangs when SHE's cooking. Roxy tries to catch them...alas, they are too quick for her. Hope your calming stuff works.

  15. Flies don't bother the boys but Bentley thinks he is supposed to chase and eat all bees. UGH! He is scared of thunderstorms and fireworks too. We use a combination of Dr. Harvey's Relax and Treatibles CBDs. The combo works miracles! (let me know if you are interested as I have discount codes!)

  20. Crikey Molly .... that's no good at all. I hope that calming stuff works for you You need me to come visit. I'm FAST!!! Any fly that comes near me is a dead fly. We get wasps inside our house. Mum's terrified I'll grab one of them and get stung big time. So far she's managed to spot them before I do.
