Manuka Honey

Mom has been searching the intermuts a lot lately to see if she can't find something natural that will help Mackie heal faster from this dreaded kennel cough.   Mackie doesn't have that doG-awful hacking cough that is associated with this illness.   It's more of a reverse-sneeze gagging sound that comes out of him.   He's still sneezing and it sends disgusting germs everywhere and the poor boy's mouth and nose are always wet.

She discovered this honey that's native to New Zealand and parts of Australia and it's called manuka honey.
"How can Manuka honey help your dog?
Many dog owners have long known about Manuka honey, applying it to wounds for quicker healing times. Manuka can also be applied to cuts or burns, or to treat any kind of wound or infection.
Manuka can also be used internally for conditions such as kennel cough, by alleviating many of your dog’s symptoms. Depending on your dog’s size, a dose of 1/2 to 1 teaspoon three or four times a day may do the trick. Choose a UMF10+ or more or an MGO™100 (Bronze) or higher.

Manuka can also be used to treat allergies, digestive issues and stomach ulcers. A good maintenance dose for your pooch should be anywhere from 1/2 to 1 teaspoon a day. Again, dosage depends on the size of your dog.
Manuka, as with all honey, contains a high sugar content, so if your dog is diabetic or overweight, it’s best to consult your veterinarian before giving Manuka to your dog. Manuka is not recommended for dogs under a year of age. Manuka may contain bacteria that your puppy isn’t ready to fight off. Adult dogs have no problems with it."

We have a natural food store that's only a mile away from us so mom took a ride down and came back with a jar of it.   It's not cheap but hey, if it works than it's worth it, right?!
It's not runny and messy.  It's soft but firm.
And Mackie loves it!  Hold still, Mackie - you're blurring the picture!
So paws and fingers are crossed that it helps Mackie to heal.
Oh and btw, so far, so good for me.   I'm not showing any kennel cough signs and neither is Jett, according to dad.   We are hoping and praying that it stays this way and the sickness doesn't spread any further!
Love ya lots♥

I followed a newborn puppy's progress on one of my Facebook groups. He was seriously injured, and they used manuka honey to help heal the wound. He did fully recover.

Oh no. I sure hope that Mackie is helped by the honey. Our pups got kennel cough once during a camping trip. First, our older Lab got it, and then our younger one got it a week later. It's no fun at all. Our paws are crossed that Mackie gets better soon, and that Molly stays healthy.

I sure hope this does the trick. It sounds like a miracle in a jar. Bentley had kennel cough once after staying at the vet and he sounded so pitiful. Give Mackie a kiss for me. ♥

Hi hi hi! Ojo here! We hope that helps! Kennel cough is yucky because it feels yucky, and also it's yucky because it spreads to other dogs so easily and that silly quarantine thing happens! Did I mention it's all very yucky? I hope you feel better soon!

Being Australian, we believe manuka honey is our go-to medication, for humans. I believe in it for Penny also, and let her have a little lick most days. There are grades of manuka honey, and even here it's might expensive for the medical-grade one - $50 for a little jar. However, there is also the not-so-strong version which is more affordable.

Penny has an ongoing cough, which at times we've thought might be kennel cough, but now we're resigned to it, as she's had it for a couple of years. One time when we were at the specialist vet, discussing her cough, I asked him about manuka honey, and he said he didn't believe it could heal a cough, because the honey goes down the digestive tract, not the breathing tube. He said it's definitely true that manuka honey is good for healing, though. So I thought, what the heck, if it's in her system it might help.

I myself take manuka honey every day as part of my breakfast.

I'll be very interested to see what you think.

I saw your comment on my blog and I'm so sorry to hear you are having ongoing issues with the kennel cough. Have they had the kennel cough vaccination? If so, my vet told me it doesn't stop a dog getting kennel cough, but it means the cough will run its course faster and your dog will recover well. I'm praying for a quick rand complete ecovery for all three dogs.
