Turkey Chili

Miss Lisa told mom that she was making turkey chili for her family this past weekend and it planted the idea in mom's head that maybe she needed to do this too.
I will help with the red peppers, mom!
Time is up for picture taking.  I'm chomping down now!
Miss Lisa didn't need a recipe but mom did.

Ingredients
  • 2lbs lean ground turkey
  • 1 (28oz) can black beans, drained
  • 1 (15oz) can kidney or pinto beans
  • 1 (28oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15oz) can petite diced tomatoes
  • 1 yellow bell pepper, chopped into small pieces
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped into small pieces
  • 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 sweet onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 2 Tbsp chili powder
  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tsp hot sauce (I use Tabasco)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1½ tsp sea salt
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese and green onions to serve
  • Tortilla chips to accompany

  1. In a large heavy bottomed pot, heat the olive oil over medium high heat.
  2. Add the onions and the garlic and sauté until translucent. Make sure you stir constantly so you don’t burn the garlic!
  3. Add the bell peppers and cook for a couple of minutes, until tender.
  4. Add the turkey and cook until browned, breaking it up with a wooden spoon (or even a potato masher).
  5. Add the black beans, the kidney (or pinto) beans, the crushed tomatoes, the diced tomatoes, the chicken (or vegetable) stock, the chili powder, brown sugar, hot sauce, oregano, basil, garlic powder, sea salt and cayenne pepper (if using) and stir until everything is combined.
  6. Once the chili boils, lower the heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for 30 to 45 minutes or until it thickens.
  7. Top it off with the green onions, a handful of shredded cheese and a dollop of sour cream and serve!
This turkey Chili is a 10!  Mom loves it!
Did you notice the antique spice box in the first photo?      Mom treated herself☺
Guess what?  I went out to do peepees at 3:15 this morning and snow was falling on my head!  yahooooooo

  2. Miss Molly. You are the only person in your whole state who is happy to see more snow. However, the chili looks great and will keep you warm. Ahhh, if we could only live in the moment like you do!

  5. It's cold and windy here today. Mom thinks chili sounds like a good idea. She likes to make it because it smells so good. We like it because we get to help.

  7. 3:15 you need a doggie door! Brr.
That chili looks good if you live up north. Here in Texas we don't put in beans. LOL. Domino would love the turkey though. But we'd just cook it up plain.
Chili is too spicy. I didn't know doggies ate bell peppers!
    Have a good day.

Your Mom's food looks delish, but I can't believe you ate the pepper. It's a vegetable!

  11. When the snow is falling and the air is cold, that's a great day for chili!!! That red pepper is so gorgeous it almost looks fake. Bet it was tasty.

Sigh, we would definitely go out to pee at 3:15 in the morning IF we had snow:) And we would find good reason to stay out there.

  13. Yum! My Mom makes turkey chili quite often and she also uses ground turkey (the lean like your Mom) and she uses peppers as well. She also adds, ready for this? CINNAMON!! Not much, just a little........she doesn't use broth in hers and she adds onions. She likes to put in the HOT red pepper flakes...your chili is quite similar! Oh and Mom just uses black beans cause she isn't a fan of kidney beans :) DakotasDen
