He was doing so well by himself! Dad was spending lots more time with him and yesterday he actually had him on his shoulder walking around in the yard and Sherwood seemed to love it! Barn Swallows were flying in and out of our barn saying hi to Sherwood when he chirped. We think maybe Sherwood got tired and couldn't tell dad that he'd had enough activity and he needed a nap. He unfortunately fell off dad's shoulder and hit the ground. He initially seemed fine after his fall. He was right back up and chirping away.
Missy and Jim came for dindin last night and after they left dad checked in on Sherwood again to feed him and get him ready for bed. He had jumped out of his nest again but when he heard dad's voice he would chirp and all dad had to do was put out his finger and he'd jump right on!
This morning Sherwood snuck out of his nest yet again and we think he must have fallen again. He lost his spunk and he stopped eating. Sherwood didn't want to die! He fought so hard to stay alive! Dad stroked him and told him not to struggle anymore. It was absolutely heartbreaking to watch! We feel so badly that God trusted us to take care of two of his precious little creatures and neither one of them made it.
Fly free little Barn Swallow babies! We're so happy we got to spend time with you - even if it was far too short! We'll miss you!
Love,
Maggie and Mitch
Hi Maggie n Mitch,
ReplyDeleteYou took care of Sherwood while he was alive; and that's what matters. I am sure that he loved you for what you did for him:)
I've added you to my "Go Digging at..." list. I hope it's okay with you.
Licks n Wags,
Oorvi
Oh wow. I was looking forward to hearing all about Sherwood's Adventures. I think the most important thing for Sherwood was to remember that he knew he was loved. You and your family gave him that and now one can ever take it away. He'll be waiting for you across the bridge. Sending comforting cuddles your way.
ReplyDeletewow this is amazing!
ReplyDeletehi I have been by here before ... but quite some months ago. a lot of life has intervened since then...
so that lil birdie is a swallow?
is it true they MUST take off from a perch and cannot fly from sitting on the ground? this is supposedly because their wings are too long
excellent pictures and your doggies are exceedingly cute
;->...
all the best 2u all
M & M, you all loved Sherwood and we are sure he knew it.
ReplyDeleteHe is now a star in the night sky.
Twinkle on Sherwood.

I know the Gods of Nature know exactly how much you cared for Sherwood. He is flying free now :-)
ReplyDeleteCheers
Charlie
Ahhh, so sorry to hear about Sherwood, what a great little chap. He sure had an adventure during his short life, he made friends all over the world and had the rare joy of being loved by both humans and doggies (not to mention pussycats and hamsters in the blog world!).
ReplyDeleteWhile short by our standards, his life was exceedingly rich!
Your pals,
Petey and Mica
Oh Maggie!
ReplyDeleteI am sad for you about Sherwood ... What a sweet little birdie ... :)
Love,
Putter
Maggie, Mitch,
ReplyDeleteYou all did your best to give little Sherwood a chance at life. His brief time on earth gave us a lot to think about that we often take for granted.
Lots of wirey love, pals,

ReplyDeleteYou guys did all you could. It is very very difficult for baby birdies to live on without their mammas, and it's amazing that Sherwood was able to enjoy as much life as he did. Just remember - you allowed them both to live the remainder of their days in a comfortable house with people who cared about them, instead of just abandoning them outside like many many other people would have done.
It is a bittersweet reminder about how short life can be and how we have to really enjoy and appreciate the time we have.
Awww...so sorry to hear about Sherwood. He is a good fighter. At least he got to know you and your parents before he passed over the Bridge...I think he was very happy with the short time he had!
ReplyDeleteScottie
Its lovely that your family was able to care for and share happy times with Sherwood.
ReplyDeleteOh I am so sorry about the passing of little Sherwood.
ReplyDeleteHe is with his brother now flying and chirping about.
Take care guys,
Mack
Aw, fly free Sherwood....
ReplyDeleteLove,
Bogart
We are so sorry! But so few animals in life get to be so loved from the very start. There may have been a few bumps on Sherwood's journey but I think it's safe to say that he was one of the lucky ones. And who knows... maybe one day the spirit of Sherwood will come back as an airedale!
ReplyDeleteWe are heartbroken for your loss. What a valiant little guy Sherwood was. Know that he went to the Rainbow Bridge surrounded by love and comfort and now he's growing up in Birdie Heaven.
ReplyDeleteBoo hoo,
Fenway
Oh Maggie...I'm so sorry. Give your Dad an extra snuggle for me. I know he is sad. You all did your best for the bird pups.

Oh, my mum started cryin....Me too actually, don't tell no one I cried okay.....
ReplyDeleteMum said she was so heartbroken when she rescued that one and he died. She tried so hard to help the lil birdie. She knows what you and your pawents are going through. I just knew that birdie would start jumping out of that box...I should have been better help to you and your daddy. My mum hates that your daddy has to go through that. Hurray for him though for trying....We always have to try even if it doesn't end the way we want too.
Paw Hugs lil birdies

Hey, Maggsie & Mitch.
ReplyDeleteI'm sending some comforting goober smooches to you, to your mama and to your sweet dad. You all made a valiant effort to help the barn swallow babies.
I'm wondering if God entrusted the care of those 2 babies to you so you could ease their way to the bridge and they didn't have to be alone and frightened during their short lives. You gave them some good lovin' in such a short time. That's more than some folks ever get.
Goober love & more smooches,
Stanley
Im sorry to hear that Maggie & Mitch, Its really sad when our friends left us but Im sure Sherwood know how much you & your family love them. Im sure Sherwood is flying freely over the rainbow bridge together with our dear friends.
ReplyDeleteextra slurpy licks,

Maggie & Mitch, Sorry to hear about your friend Sherwood. Maybe god needed them to help look after our friends who have went over the rainbow bridge so don't fell badly.

ReplyDeleteOh Maggie & Mitch, I'm so sorry that Sherwood has passed on. I hope you all can take comfort in knowing the wonderful quality of life you provided for him and his brother. Really sad to hear that. Fly free. Glad they had the chance to live even for just a little while under the loving care of all of you.
ReplyDeleteAww, that was sad... Sherwood had such a cute personality too. He would've been a character all grown up! You were lucky to have known him.
ReplyDeleteRudy

ReplyDelete~ Girl girl
Oh how sad that Sherwood died. He looked such a chirpy little chappie, he must have been very happy that you looked after him so well.
ReplyDeleteMolly and Taffy
My heart goes out to you in your sadness at these little deaths. I once rescued two little nestlings and raised them to about this age. Then when I came out one morning they were dead. I was so devastated I had to come home from work after about an hour because I couldn't cope with my regret at their death.
ReplyDeleteSince then I have been told by a bird expert that's it's incredibly difficult to raise baby birds. It won't have been anything wrong in the care you were giving them. It's just that we can't provide all aspects of the care a mother or father bird would give.
Hi, Maggie and Mitch -
ReplyDeleteWe are a little behind on blogging because we were away for the weekend. We are so sorry to hear about little Sherwood.
At least all of you gave the baby barn swallows some love.
Love -
Hershey and Kaci
Poor birdies, we know you guys tried to keep those little guys alive. They are flying free and happy now.
ReplyDeleteWe are sorry to hear that Sherwood died. Baby birds are hard to raise if you aren't their mom. You did a great job trying and I'm sure they appreciated the love and effort you gave them.
ReplyDeleteOh no, we've only just found out about Sherwood. Darn...poor little thing. We were hoping he'd be ok. Good on you for trying to help both little birds.
