Guard Dog on Duty

If you didn't know me and you came to my back door and knocked, you would wonder if I was a vicious attack dog! I have the biggest, meanest bark when someone is at the back door and someone pretty much includes everyone!
We used to have a pretty lace curtain on the window next to our back door and I removed it time and time again by jumping at it to let the visitor know that I'm here - don't mess with me!
Mom tried her hardest to break me of this behavior and she never could. One day a new idea popped into that pretty little head of hers - aha! I'm going to put a curtain on that window so that Maggie can't see people standing on the back porch and knocking on the door!

And she did! She took a lot of my fun away! See that black bench right under the window? It used to be red to match the woodwork but mom had to paint it because I had scratch and dig marks all over it from lunging at the window! And do you see to the left of teddy and my mailman toy - those dark marks hovering right above the bench top?

Those funny dark spots are my toenails hammering the wall as I race from one end of the house to the door at 100 mph to warn people that I'm home and beat it! As you can see I've done some damage to the window sill too! YIKES!

The fact is, I'm really a furry peach. I'm not mean at all. I just like people to think I am! When the UPS man comes to the back door and mom has to sign for a package, the UPS man usually holds the door closed so I can't push out! Now how is mom supposed to sign her name if she can't get out the door? DUH!! This same UPS man tried to be my friend by bribing me with cookies! NOPE, I wouldn't hear of it! The only people who are allowed through that door, and they have to sweet talk me first, are mom, dad, my sister Missy and her soon-to-be-hubby Jim. They're the only ones!

Do you think now that we have Mitch he's going to pick up on this not-so-great behavior? Mom is sorta worried about this. She says she doesn't really need two attack dogs. One is more than enough!

So far Mitch hasn't really barked at the back door. He doesn't need to - I've taken care of it for him! And when I bark and race towards the door he follows but he really has no clue what's going on! He just does it cause I do it!

So what do you all think? Will Mitch copy my attack-the-door behavior or will he let me be the hot head and he can be the calm one?

Until next time..................

Love ya lots,

Maggie

  2. Mitch may copy you, Maggie. You sound a lot like Twix when someone comes to the door - mom says it's really stressful. The Chinese food delivery guy is terrified to come to our house because of him! LOL!

I bet no one will ever break into your home :)

  3. Hi Maggie,

Hmmm, not sure about the curtains. How on earth are you gonna protect your castle???!?!?!? You're gonna have to put your other doggy senses to use. Listen and smell, and maybe you can still see the intruders!!!

  6. I love scaring the crap out of people too!

One time a kid came to deliver a flyer and I barked so viciously, he got scared and threw the flyer on the grass and ran away.

He doesn't need to know that I just want to lick him to death.

  9. Hi Maggie,
I am a barker when someone rings the doorbell too! It scares the daylights out of them cos when I bark, I sound like a ferocious big dog but haha.. little do they know that behind the door is only a 7kg furball..
(Oh, maybe that's why I receive all my mails late.. the mailman hates me.. uh oh...)

  11. I bark like crazy when people so much as walk past the house. If they come in I just lie down and wait for tummy rubs. Mummy says this will not scare away bad people.

I can't stop laughing about the UPS man holding the door LOL. That's it, I'm sending you lots of stuff via UPS!!

ps. mum says to tell you that Mitch will pick up on the barking, that's just what annoying little brothers do. STINKY does whatever I do.

  13. Ooh Maggie, who would have thought you had such a side? As others have said though, your house will be super safe.

I am hopeless & make no reaction to doorbells, phones, people passing by when on walkies in the dark...I'd be the most useless guard dog EVER! I do have a mean bark, but it rarely gets used apart from warning off the carpet & grass monsters.

  14. Hehehehe, it's fun to scare people isn't it?? Sometimes I don't even bark or growl, I just sit at the glass door with my ears up staring at them. Guess what? Some people won't even knock if I am sitting there!! Mom says that is great for sales people!

I am not cute and cuddly like you though, if I was, I would bark and growl at the door to scare them too! I think you will teach Mitch how to do it too, even if your mom don't want you to!

    Orson

  19. REally? I am not a barker, so instead I sit by the door and wiggle wiggle wiggle to let everyone know how happy I am that they are there, and then when the come in I push the door open more so I can love all over them and wiggle and jump and lick and nibble at them and be SO happy to see them. This is cute when a Pomeranian does it.

It is not cute when it is a newfoundland that weighs 133 lbs. Or at least so my mama keeps telling me. I think she's just jealous because I don't often do it when SHE comes home.

  21. Wow, I think that is a little harsh of the mailman since are not outside, and never been able to get at him!

My mailman brings me a treat everyday.......he has since I was a baby, so I look forward to his visit.

  22. We are not sure but we think Mitch will just follow what you do (blindly)..haha.

    Boy & Baby's Mama:
Boy only bark if someone is hanging around too long outside our door but he wont bark to evryone that pass by whereas Baby barks at everyone. Not because she is aggressive but she is such a busybody :)
