No, we're not in the market for any puppies at this time and dad wouldn't let any farmyard animals sleep next to his Indian motorcycles in the barn! Now THAT would be a sight! haha
The reason why dad wanted another bird is because our Grey Lag, Grampa died and dad didn't want Dauby to be all alone, especially after the long brutal winter that we had. The two birds kept each other company through many cold nights. We figure Grampa was about 15 years old and we feel so badly that he's gone. He was such a character! We don't want to go into detail so let's just say that we have a hatred for coyotes right now! grrrrrrrrrrr
These girlz are 2 years old. Paul, their original owner, bought 2 swan eggs from Pennsylvania and the rest is history! These girlz have been raised with hoomans their whole lives. They are English Mutes. Dauby is a Polish Mute swan.
It didn't take much coaxing to get them out of dad's truck.
They're on their way to meet Dauby for the first time.
They're all getting along just fine. It appears that they're going to be BFF!
Dauby's beak is a brighter orange and her feet are grey instead of black. We understand that the different color feet mean English vs Polish. The girlz beaks will get more orange as they mature.
So now we need your help.
Mom thought originally that we should name the new swan a name that started with the letter "D" to match Dauby. But dad came home with 2 swans because he and Paul didn't think it would be right to separate the girlz as they've know each other forever and we totally agree with this!
Any ideas on what we should name the girlz? We could sure use your help!
So until next time............
Love ya lots
Maggie and Mitch
Oh Maggie and Mitch your new friends are just beautiful. So very sorry that Grampa was killed. I know how you feel bout coyotes right now. I lost 8 of my hens, I only have two left now, Mom thinks it was a cougar. Mom says that wild animals have to eat too but it made me sad.
ReplyDeleteHow about a contest to name the new swans?
How about Bryda it is a Polish girls name and means "power or strength"
Then there is Kazimiera it is also Polish and means "keeping the peace"
Maybe these names will bring s bit of luck if you will to the Swans!
woos, Tessa
So sad to read about Grampa - we always love the pix of your beautiful swans. Your new swans ( we thought they were English) are gorgeous and graceful and all things we think of in swans! And they are obviously very smart! We'll have to think on it for a while and get back to you after a bit of research!

How wonderful that they took to each other immediately and nice for you after such a sad loss. (Chickens wouldn't do that but they're not quite as smart as swans.)
ReplyDeleteDaphne is a nice swan name. Dawn the Swan. Darla Darling. Dora Ador-ya. Lazy Daisy. La Belle Della. Ok, I'll stop now!
What a wonderful story!
ReplyDeleteLove all of the name suggestions so far! Especially the flower names...How about Daphne and Rose or Daphne and Ivy or Violet or Laurel! We are suckers for the old fashioned flower names!

What beautiful birds - we are sorry you lost Grandpa - those coyotes sure are opportunists.
ReplyDeleteAs they are English Swans - we like the idea of english sisters names? Like Jane and Cassandra (Austen) , or Diana and Unity (Mitford) or Elizabeth and Margaret or even Kate and Pippa? The list is endless - we are sure whatever their names - they will be perfectly happy and feather fluffingly joyful in their new home with their new found friend.

Sally and Paddy
What a beautiful surprise!!! There are so many names to choose from. Hmmm....what about Daisy and Dolly or Macy and Molly?

We are soooo sorry about Grandpa! We have a Coyote problem here too. A lot of cats and small dogs go missing!
ReplyDeleteYou two new swans are gorgeous! How about Diana for one, since they are English. It could be a tribute to Princess Diana. And the other one could be Darla or Darlene.
Aire-hugs,
Penny & Patches
English girs' names: Daisy, Dale, Damiana (a feminine form of Damian, 'to tame'), Damosel (archaic english name for a young unmarried woman), Daphne, Davida or Davita (feminine from of David 'beloved').
ReplyDeleteI could go on forever, with my baby name book open beside me, but I see you've got lots of suggestions already.
I'll be checking in to see what you decide.
I'm sorry to hear about Grampa!
Those photos are exquisite!
WOW they are gorgeous. Grandpaw Kodiak told us stories about ttwo swans they had when we had our place up north. One was named Angel and the male was Boss. They had babies every year. It was so much fun watching them grow up.Sorry to hear about grandpa. Wish we had our place up north again.

We are so sorry about your grandpa. That is sad. We really love the doves...beautiful! Names...oh my...we always have to come up with names by the help of other people for some reason! Our last dog went without a name for weeks until my late husband finally said "what about Alex?" It sounded great and Alex it was! Lots of love and Happy 4th of July! Debbie & Holly

WOW those swans are gorgeous! They remind me of the ones I saw during a boat ride at a themepark we went to a few months back. Mmmm what about Delilah? It means delicate. Or Dara which means wisdom?
ReplyDeleteWe are very sorry about grampa. Darn those coyotes! We like Daisy and Daphne.
ReplyDeleteLots of choices!
Poor Grandpa!! We are so sorry you lost him in that awful way.
ReplyDeleteI like the names Hope and Helen. Don't know why, just came to me without thinking about it at all!!
Have a good one all you guys.
xx, Fern
PS, They look so pretty all together.
Oh you lucky guys! Great story. They are beautiful. Have a fun week with your new friends. Ros and Oscar
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this post! My son said to name them "2 lovers." My daughter said Persephone and Aphrodite. Either way, they are gorgeous. Wow! -Tony
ReplyDeleteThey are beautiful, and we are glad that they get along with Dauby. Names are hard for the muzzer...she even gave my sissies first names that both start with E because she was in a rut. So she says Darling and Dearest, but me and Teka want you to name them Dangerous and Dagger, because that way maybe they will scare the nasty coyotes away.
ReplyDeletegussie n teka
That is totally awesome! THREE swans! They are just so beautiful. We are terrible with names-but we know you will come up with something great!
ReplyDeleteCorr..your swans are bootiful!
ReplyDeleteWe like Sally & Sara swans. But ok Paws Up ...thats not helpful as you want names begining with D!
Whoops back to the drawing board for us thickies!
