Wheelie Wednesday - Granny Square

Hi everyone - it's me, Francesca!
I knew she could do it!
Mom has been practicing this crochet stuff every single night. She bought a larger crochet hook than what she had thinking that bigger would be easier to see all of her mistakes and trust me, there were a LOT of them!
This is her practice piece.
She discovered that the only stitches you need to know to make  the granny square are the chain stitch and the double crochet!  She's there!
This is her first competed granny square!
There's a lot of uneven-ness and slanted stitches but mom is so proud of herself! She's wanted to learn how to crochet for a long time and seeing Doyle and Mollie's granny squares on their blog was the push that our mom needed!
The hat will come later.  Mom still needs to learn more stitches to make me a hat!
Thank doG for You Tube!  She watched granny square videos until she couldn't take it anymore!  Mom is a slow learner and she says You Tube is a lot smarter way to go than antagonizing your friends to keep showing you the stitches over and over!

Here's the next square~
Right now it's all practice.
This one still needs two more rounds to make it match the other one in size!

Way to go, mom!
Dad comes home today! We can't wait to hear all of his stories!

See you all next Wednesday!

Love,
Francesca

  1. Hi M & M! Your mom's granny squares look great! Now, the rest of the crochet stitches are the same as the double crochet, but you either add stitches or drop stitches before you pull it through for the final time. (It would make more sense if you can watch a video). We can't wait to hear your dad's stories!

  8. Those look great! Your Mom is very talented, before you know it, Mitch and Maggie will have crocheted blankets. Mom likes to knit - she made me a sweater once but forgot that I'm a boy and have different anatomical needs so after having to wash out the sweater every time I wore it on a walk, she gave it to my pal Ruby! (Good plan, huh?)

  11. Yeah for your Mom. Our Mom has known how yo knit forever, but our Grandma used to crochet. Now that she's over the bridge, Mom needs to learn to crochet for herself. She says it makes her hands cramp.

  12. See, we knew she could do it. And with Dad away, it was a great time for her to learn. Tell her Mom would be happy to help her if she has any questions. AND we can't wait to hear more about Dad's trip.

  21. I do like the granny squares, especially the lavender one. Granny squares are the best to learn on. The uneven and crooked will go away with practice. ;)

  26. Wow, my Mom is jealous! She tried crocheting but got so bad at it she stopped. My Grandmom has started knitting again -- Mom remembers how Grandmom used to knit when Mom was a little bitty human.
Your Mom did a good job!
