Compromised Kidneys

Back in early December, when mom was in Florida she mentioned that I had a tick-born illness and that I was taking doxy. Doxy has been Heaven sent! It cured me of my tick-born illness and gave me lots of energy while I was on it! That's the good news. The stressful news to me and mom is that my kidneys have been compromised because of this tick-born illness! I've had the necessary blood work and urine tests done and the proof is all too clear.

So our next step is for me to start eating kidney-sparing food!
Very shortly after we got this very disturbing news, we contacted Elaine, Sunshade's mom! Elaine is BRILLIANT with this kind of stuff, having gone through it with both of her furbutts and mom knew that if anyone could put her mind at ease and point her in the right direction and lend a helping hand, it would be Elaine!

Elaine is currently helping mom come up with a menu for a home cooked diet for me so I'm hoping before too long I'll be eating beef and rice and veges and all sorts of yummy things! I can't wait!

The next change for me has been added meds and supplements.
This is only the start. We'll be adding vitamin B and C and E and Co-Q10 plus any others that mom and Elaine feel that will help me out.
We can't thank Elaine enough! She has been a doG send to both of us!
And I have more VERY disturbing news. Seeing as my kidneys are compromised and we're trying to improve our creatinine and BUN levels, etc, and spare my body, mom has let me know that there are now foods that are unacceptable for me to be eating!
One of them is pizza! OMG, how can I exist without pizza?
Another food that I can no longer eat is ice cream! Shoot me, why don't cha!
Another no-no is cheese and the other one that I'm most upset about is peanut butter!
Mom keeps telling me that it's okay - we will find substitues that will make you happy!
I sure hope so!

So that's my news! It's not very uplifting for the start of a brand new year but hopefully mom and Elaine will turn it around for me. My blood test numbers MUST improve!

So until next time..............

Love ya lots,

Maggie

  2. Oh Maggie. Those of some of your most favorites. Why no pizza? Is it the yeasty stuff or the wheat stuff. Muzzer has a recipe for a pizza crust using rice flours...I don't think it is so great, but maybe if ya just gotta have it, your mom can do a better job with the recipe.

We hope the new diet helps you and makes you feel a lot better. Not a great start to the New Year with all those diet restrictions but if it works cutting them out and helps your kidneys!

  4. Oh My..this is disturbing news.
I don't like reading this it makes me feel tummy ill.

    Time for a kidney detox!

Drink lots of water. Don't eat big chunks of stuff..and stay away from foods with artificial stuff..stick to natural foods so there's nothing to overtax your innards! No sugar, salt, garlic or fatty yummies.
And I hear good things about milk thistle.

    Be well my sweet friend!

I cooked for him exclusively for that time and until the end he was very happy. The last 2 weeks where not good but all the rest you would never know anything was wrong.

  16. Ummm. Sad news. News that sounds oddly familiar. Sorta reminds us of the very low protein diet Sweet Molly was on (we've heard all about it.) (It did wonders for her, by the way!) If that's the case ... what about a veggie pizza sans cheese? Any chance that might be allowed???? Is it worth asking? Whatever, it sounds like you are in good hands ... and that's what matters the most. Anything is worth it if it helps those kidneys. We'll be crossing our paws and hoping some new snack emerges that you'll LOVE! (Like Carrots??)

Love ya Maggie. Happy HEALTHY New Year!

  19. Hi, My Mum's Malamute, Kira, had chronic kidney disease and was given 6 weeks to live. Mum made her the homemade diet and she had acupuncture every month. Acupuncture was HUGELY important in giving her 2 more years of beautiful life! She ended up going to heaven because of her horribly arthritic spine...the kidneys were still chugging along. Kidney disease can be managed. We love you beautiful Maggie (and Mitchy Poo too)! Love, Josie the Cattle Dog

Keep your beardie up! Maybe you can at least look at photos of pizza (sort of like foodable porn). I think that Mitch should go on the diet with you for support. After all, not fair for him to eat peanut butter whilst you eat icky kibbles.

We are sorry to read this post about your kidneys.
We know it is hard to make changes to your diet.
Our mum says to tell you that Harry had to have a kidney saving diet too.
He did not like the low protein dog food but soon adapted to meals our mum made.
    He liked fish/chicken with rice.
Sorry about the pizza and the ice cream - we know you love these foods but we also know your mum will find great new foods for you to enjoy.

  47. hi Maggie, that's very sad news about your poor kidneys, but we want to tell you about Auggie, who is our poodle friend. she has poorly kidneys too, and after her humans finally got her to a good vet, she is doing just great! she gets her pawsonally cooked meals which she loves - even a little too much as she is a little chubby, but don't tell her we said that. we see her at the dog park all the time and she runs and fetches her ball and she's 8 years old. not quite a senior citizen, but getting up there. so even though it's a huge bummer to give up some of your favorite foods, we bet your mom will find you some wonderful substitutes and you can sneak a treat every now and then, we guess. moderation, okay? we want you to stay healthy and gorgeous for a very long time.

Hi there - Paddy here - as a dog that knew the pleasures of Pizza, Cheese, Ice Cream and then had them taken away after my pancreatitis attack - I sympathise - but I am feeling great and have learned to love my new Low fat alternatives. The good news is that my family hate eating these foods in front of me - apparently I look longingly at the food - they have improved their diet too! They have more home cooked meals - and cut out a lot of fat too! Sometimes from a negative comes a positive!

  74. Please look into a raw meaty bone diet and acupuncture. I just lost my 12 year old miniature schnauzer due to kidney failure and have done quite a bit of research on holistic healing since then. I've switched all my dogs to raw meaty bones because dogs can't digest and don't need carbs. They actually strain the kidneys.
    http://www.rawmeatybones.com/

Vets are taught very little about nutrition and what they are taught is sponsored by the pet food industry.

I don't want to see anyone else lose a pet to kidney failure. My Dusty was given that exact K/D food to eat as well as antibiotics. It didn't change his kidney function at all.

  79. Poor Maggie, I so hope you will get well soon. There are plenty of other food that are yummy and good for you too, so don't worry! Health is everything ok! We love you!

If it makes you feel better, my parents are not going to feed me any treats from now on cos they are bad for me...well, they better feed me yummy stuff for my daily meals then!

  81. Hi, Maggie -

What distressing news about your kidneys. No more ice cream, pizza, peanut butter and cheese?!?

Mama may have an alternative about the ice cream. Bosco (Hershey's older sister) used to get ice cream occasionally. One day Mama found ice cream for dogs in the grocery store. It is called Frosty Paws and Bosco loved it! Maybe you can have that instead of the ice cream?

    Love -

    Hershey and Kaci

P.S. I (Hershey) get Frosty Paws sometimes.

  83. Maggie, we are sorry to hear about your kidney condition. But it sounds like your Mommy and Elaine have a good game plan and you'll be doing much better soon. From what we've read (hard to remember specific websites), dietary changes will make a big improvement.
Hugs, Miley and Pat (Miley's Mom)
