My Very First

Do you realize that I'm 11 1/2 years old and today was my very first home cooked meal EVER?
I've lived with mom and dad since I was 8 weeks old and I've had many different kinds of kibble along the way but I've never had a whole huge dish of the yummiest food ever! And it's just for me!
You're looking at ground beef and rice and spaghetti squash and 2 eggs - 1 yolk and the whites of two eggs - Mitch got the other yolk! And there's even a nice dollop of yogurt on top and of course my supplements are underneath the yogurt! And this is just one meal! I get two of them daily just like this one! Am I the luckiest girl alive, or what?!
Elaine has been there every step of the way and has given mom so much help and support and confidence! I can't tell you how much mom has been stressing about taking the plunge and doing this for me! She has been so worried that she wouldn't be able to provide me with the balanced diet that I would need to stay healthy!
And Ike's comment about the lacking protein in the Hills prescription k/d food kinda hit home with mom too, even though Elaine told her that she really should cook for me right from the start!
She I have you to thank for this too, Ike!

Just a few more bits of rice and I'm all done! What a treat! I can feel my kidneys getting better already!

A big huge thank you again and again, Elaine, and also to the K9Kidney group at Yahoo! There is so much wonderful information there and they are also very helpful and very supportive to dogs with kidney disease.
I think I'm going to be okay and my new home cooked diet sure does make me happy! I can't wait for my next meal!

So until next time...............

Love ya lots,

Maggie

  9. We knew you'd love ground beef and rice - sometimes Mom fixes it for us - brown rice, ground beef, peas and carrots - we love it!!! Lucky you to get it twice a day. Carrleigh and Lilly came from a breeder that cooked all of her dog's meals.

  10. Hi Maggie! (and mitch of course)

your food looks great. me mom cooks me special food too. she makes salmom & brown rice with veggies, chicken or turkey with noodles, beef stew etc etc. she read book about how you never know what is in dog food, and there are no regulations etc etc.
so ever since then she makes all the dog food herself.
    yey for me!

ps. thanks for your kind words.

  11. Isn't it awesome when you can find something positive in anything? I can't say I'm not drooling over your food, even our katz are drooling. I will however make sure my Momma read this because my ten year old sissy is having both kidney and thyroid issues. Thank you and your family for sharing and teaching us too. Enjoy your wonderful meals!

  15. Maggie, We are so glad that Mom is cooking for you. I cooked for both Joker and Amanda. Joker loved his meals. Amanda on the other hand did not like the rice and vegetables. I kept Joker alive 3 and a half years and only one year with Amanda. But the vet was surprised at how long they lived after they said they where gone.
    Good job Sue, Fern

  21. YUMMMMM-MMMMMMMMY Maggie!!!! You're the luckiest gurrrrl with the bestest and fastest learning mom!!

That looks just like what STINKY was eating except he didn't finish like you did! Boy did you ever liked that, are you sure you got kidney problems? You certainly don't look or eat like it..hehehe!

Is that a Vit-B pill I see on your rice? You will eat it just like that? Both me and STINKY need to have pills shove down our throats (well, unless its Advils with STINKY).

Maybe Mitch can have some canned veggies or those frozen peas/carrots while you eat your yummmiest Princess Meal?

    Love nibbles,

  23. Hi Maggie

That sounds like a delicious meal - homemade meals are the best. It is wonderful to read about the great support and information you are getting.

We have an aunt with a kerry blue terrier who has been very ill and has been brought back to fitness with homemade meals - especially my aunt's chicken soup. A change in diet can really work.

take care and continue to enjoy those wonderful meals

  29. Hi, I am so glad I found your blog, I love dogs. I have 2 mini schnauzers myself and I am a dog groomer.

I give my dogs kibble but I also give them food as well such as veg, chicken and eggs.

  30. Our servant used to cook for all of us all of the time, for like 12 years. Then the chicken down here in the south was messing up our stomaches. Now she cooks for Mama Pajama (who still can't eat the chicken) for her pancreas. We wish she would cook for all of us again. Ol' Poke 'n Stick says there is AWFUL stuff in our kibble, even though it's the expensive kind.

We dogs lived for millennia before the humans invented kibble from their trash. You're a lucky Maggie!

We always knew your mom would rise to the challenge and we are so pleased to see that you are going to have a diet that keeps you happy and healthy.
Now we are off to speak to our mum about the possibility of a home cooked meal!

  41. Wow that food looks pretty good Mags. We know your mum has done her homework and will make sure you get what you need in your new diet. We often have home cooked food. We dont eat kibble and we're pretty healthy but we understand how careful you have to be with your kidneys.

Elaine is great for helping you out. She's a good matie.

  42. That looks sooooo good! Is the meat cooked first? I was on diet of cooked chicken/rice & burger/rice for a couple of weeks once and it proved too rich for me...caused...ummm...rumbly in the tumbly issues. Sometimes we get some veggies with our kibbie...but nothing so scrumptious looking. Maybe if she'd get her butt up earlier, she could rustle up some grub like that for us.

I hope you are feeling better and continue to thrive on the new eats.

    sniffies,
    Bonnie

Well done, Sue; our good friend Scooby's mum took a long time to take the plunge. She was pretty scared to try a home made diet too. But now she is so happy to have done it.

  48. Can I come to your house to eat??? I'd feel better after that meal. Hope you get much better every day! I used to eat chicken and rice, but then I stopped. Didn't like it anymore. Before that, I ate a really good mush of stuff like cooked rice with mushed up ground beef, broccoli and ground turkey. Then I stopped eating THAT. Wonder why? You invite me over and I'll come eat with you!
